About this Item: Kelmscott Press, Hammersmith London, 1892. Linen and Boards. Condition: Very Good. Edward Burne Jones (illustrator). First Edition. Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1892. Three large tall 4to volumes. Original 1/2 linen, org paper labels, with blue holland boards, 100% hand made laid paper internally fine, binding: Very Good. 4to. This is 1 of 500 paper copies with no vellum copies issued. of the Golden Legend . Morris intended for this to be the very first book printed at the Kelmscott Press; however, due to the length and an issue with sufficient paper supply, the project was postponed. As Morris did not own CaxtonÕs 1493 translation of the Golden Legend and no complete modern reprints existed, Ellis arranged to borrow a copy from the Cambridge University Library for transcription by his daughter. Morris, Jones and Ellis collaborated on many other Kelmscott volumes, including the Chaucer. [Peterson Bibliography, A7] There are two exquisite full page woodcuts by Edward Burne-Jones in Volume I and there are beautiful woodcut initials throughout. This is the only pure set of this title now for sale, totally unsophisticated, this is the original Carla Strassburger set, with her gilt morocco bookplate mounted on front endsheet, from the 1975 Sotheby Parke Bernet Sale in New York. A lovely history of the medieval history. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Private Press. Seller Inventory # 1000167

There is evidence of fluid damage on the spines which may be partially from original binding approach. There are two illustrations/ illuminations by Edward Burne-Jones and the magnificent title pages were the first done by Morris. The Kelmscott Colophon is on the last page of Volume 3, and the printed slip asking any possible re-binders not to trim the pages or put the volumes in a press so as not to destroy what Kelmscott worked so hard to replicate from medieval printing.
