Gift note tipped-in to front pastedown explaining the previous ownership of the book - Robert Whyte, early Vice President of the Ladies Golf Union and Mabel Stringer, first female golf journalist, founder of the Girls Golfing Society and Veterans Ladies' Golf Association and early assistant-secretary of the LGU. A scarce title with a unique association. Wear to extremities; soiling and darkening to boards and spine; rear joint cloth separated from top of spine two thirds down at which point the cloth is torn across the spine (repaired); rear inner hinge paper separated although hinge intact; front hinge starting at lower edge; endpapers foxed; a good copy. Being a Collection of Interesting Monographs on the Royal and Ancient Game of Golf. Typically faded or worse, the spine cloth on this copy is in clean, bright condition. Slight hand soiling to the cover cloth, upper cover has one small tan stain. Only the slightest offset from the pastedowns to the free endpapers, contents clean and unmarked. This copy bears the armorial bookplate of John Sterling Alston (1839-1913). Born in Lesmahagow, Ayr, Alston made much of his sizeable fortune in the textile trade in Bombay, India. He also owned the Stockbriggs Limework. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
