About this Item: Oxford: printed at the Theatre, 1757. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. (12), 444 pp. 8vo, contemporary calf, spine gilt, red morocco label (slight wear to spine). First edition. The principal collection of verse by an academic poet with a particular fondness for the language and meter of Spenser. William Thompson (1712-1767) was born in Westmoreland, and educated at Queen's College, Oxford; he unsuccessfully applied for the Oxford professorship of poetry in 1751. Thompson became a fellow of his college, and succeeded to the rectory of Hampton Poyle with South Weston in Oxfordshire, where he remained until his death. The poems in this volume are divided into two "tomes," each with a separate title-page. The long narrative, "Gondibert and Birtha," also has a separate title-page, and takes its subject from a poem by Davenant. The two internal title-pages are wrongly dated 1751, as is noted in a rather long list of errata at the end of the preliminaries; a few copies have an additional errata slip, but none is present here. A very good copy. With the bookplate of Oliver Brett, Viscount Esher. Foxon, p. 793; CBEL II, 569. Seller Inventory # 982r-z

About this Item: Printed for John Holden, London, 1651. Second edition. [4], 64, [4], 243, [7]. With preliminary errata leaf, and V8, a duplicate of the text of V7v. Contemporary blind-ruled sheep. Lightly rubbed, with small leather flaw to spine and a little loss to bottom corner of lower board, else a crisp copy. Sir William Davenant or D'Avenant (bap. 1696, d.1668), English dramatist and poet. An ardent royalist, the Poet Laureate Davenant was outlawed on the charge of high treason by Parliament in 1641 after participation in the First Army Plot. He began work on the epic poem Gondibert, a combination of Renaissance drama, classical epic and Hobbesian philosophical theories of state, after fleeing to France in the wake of Royalist defeat. Its composition and publication was interrupted by his capture at sea en route to take up his position as lieutenant governor of Maryland. Imprisonment on the Isle of Wight, a sentence of death (later commuted, apparently following intervention from Milton) and subsequent imprisonment in the Tower of London followed. Much discussed on publication in Cromwellian England, scholarly attention has since focused upon the prefaratory letter to Thomas Hobbes, and his reply, both of which included here. Published in both quarto and octavo format in 1651, no publication priority has been proven, though it is deduced by C.M. Dowling ('The First Edition of Gondibert: Quarto or Octavo?', The Library. 1939, p167-179) that the compositor of the octavo edition had reference to a quarto edition. Grolier, Wither to Prior 245. About this Item: London, Printed for John Holden . 1651., 1651. Small 8vo., pp. [2], 64, [4], 243, [7], without the errata leaf after the title (see below); cut close, just shaving text on A4, V5 and V7, but a good copy in contemporary calf, rebacked.Second (first octavo) edition, first issue, preserving the cancelland V8. In at least some copies, 'the text for V7v [the final page of the Post-script] was printed in error on V8r [presuambly leaving V7v blank]. The sheet was then passed through the press a second time with the text correctly imposed' (ESTC). In the other copies we can trace preserving the cancelland (at Birmingham and Folger), the errata leaf is wanting as here, suggesting that the rest of the impression, once the mistake was discovered, was able to use V8 for the errata. The title-page is (presumably) A1 and the Author's preface begins on A2, so the errata leaf would be a singleton insert.Founded on the aesthetic theories of Hobbes, Gondibert is dedicated to the philosopher in a long 'Preface' which is followed by Hobbes's well-known 'Answer', itself one of the major documents of seventeenth-century criticism. The quarto edition of the same year was published while Davenant was in prison in the Tower, and many copies have his manuscript corrections.Wing D 326; Macdonald & Hargreaves 40. Language: English.
