About this Item: Jonathan Cape, London, 1929. Red Cloth. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 448pp. 1929. First edition. Second issue. A very good, essentially clean, tight copy in very good minus very largely complete jacket. Provenance: from the collection of M. Wynn Williams - an old credit card receipt loosely inserted inside. No inscriptions. Bumps to the lower two board corners. The head of the spine a little bumped. Several very small soil/stain marks - not heavy to the tail of the cloth spine. Slight mottling to the cloth to the upper rear board. The dust jacket has not been price-clipped. The jacket is a little chipped to the head and tail of the spine but with no loss of text. It is also a little chipped to the corners of the jacket and to the head of the rear panel (no loss of image) and also a tiny chip to the rear jacket joint - this one about 2/3mm in diameter. The jacket is also somewhat toned - particularly to the spine and a little dust-soiled too. There is a little creasing to the head of the jacket and several short tears and nicks - expertly repaired in one or two places. The jacket has a protective transparent loose cover over it. A very good clean, tight copy of this second issue in a fundamentally well preserved jacket. Shipping from the UK. Seller Inventory # 238387

About this Item: Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith, New York, 1930. First American edition of Graves' classic autobiography. Octavo, original red cloth. Advanced copy in the dust jacket without the price and the Paris Gun listed on the back flap, "To be published in February Probable Price, $3.50". Near fine in a very good dust jacket with some light wear to the crown and foot of the spine. Good-Bye to All That bids farewell not only to England and his English family and friends, but also to a way of life. Tracing his upbringing from his solidly middle-class Victorian childhood through his entry into the war at age twenty-one as a patriotic captain in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, this dramatic, poignant, often wry autobiography goes on to depict the horrors and disillusionment of the Great War, from life in the trenches and the loss of dear friends, to the stupidity of government bureaucracy and the absurdity of English class stratification. Paul Fussell has hailed it as "the best memoir of the First World War.". Seller Inventory # 2654

About this Item: Jonathan Cape, London, 1929. Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Lye, Len (illustrator). First Edition, First Impression. A very good copy in a good dust jacket by Len Lye, some minor 2 inch split to d/w hinge and wear to head of spine, not price clipped. This is a copy of the elusive true First Edition, First Issue. This edition with the infamous Sassoon poem on pp.341-343, removed from all later impressions and editions. The story of the suppression of this issue is well documented and most copies were apparently destroyed, it is generally believed that few survived. The book printed a poem Sassoon had written to Graves in rhyming letter form and Sassoon was mortified by this inclusion demanding the recall of the edition and the excision of the offending pages in the second impression, this was done and it is these later editions that are most frequently found. It is regarded that these honest and touching lines are some of the best Sassoon ever wrote. Original salmon pink cloth, spine gilt. Complete with the distinctive Len Lye dust wrapper. 448pp. It was in November of 1929 that Sassoon had written to a friend, "I deeply resent his printing my verse letter to him & shall threaten Cape with legal action (for breach of copyright) unless he undertakes to cut it out" Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall. About this Item: Jonathan Cape. First edition; first state, 8vo; original salmon cloth boards. This is the first state with lines on pages 289-290 and 341-343 present. The Sassoon poem was suppressed at his insistence and was removed from further editions. Estimates vary as to the number of copies of the first state to survive after the publishers tried to recall them. The other passage removed was the knockings in the night. The cream coloured dust jacket, printed in black was designed by Len Lye and incorporates a photograph of Graves by Alfred Cracknell. The same photograph serves as the frontispiece. The book is near fine, spine ends bumped and boards a little dusty. The dust jacket is also near fine with some wear to top of spine and one short closed tear to both front and rear panels. A lovely copy increasingly difficult to find in this condition. Seller Inventory # 2292

About this Item: London: Jonathan Cape., 1929. First edition, first printing [first state]. Original salmon coloured cloth, with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A lovely very near fine copy, the cloth clean, fresh and without fading, the spine tips lightly bumped. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner’s inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the near fine lightly rubbed dustwrapper which has a couple of tiny closed tears at the top edge of the rear panel and is a little darkened at the extremities. Not price-clipped (10s 6d net to the front flap) and without repair or restoration. An excellent example of the first state of the author’s autobiography, a large part of which is taken up by his experience of the First World War, in which Graves served as a lieutenant, then captain in the Royal Welch Fusiliers with Siegfried Sassoon. The long poem by Siegfried Sassoon is present to pages 341-3 (removed from all subsequent issues after the Sassoon’s threat of legal action). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers. Seller Inventory # 14433

About this Item: London: Jonathan Cape, 1929, 1929. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Bookplate to front pastedown. Spine a little rolled, dark spotting to top edge of text block. A very good copy indeed in the price-clipped jacket, spine panel slightly toned, ends of spine panel chipped, a couple of short closed tears to head of panels, tape repair to verso. Photographic portrait frontispiece, 7 plates. First edition, first impression, a rare first issue with the infamous Sassoon poem intact. The story of the suppression of this issue is well recorded. This work printed a poem that Sassoon had written to Graves in letter form. Sassoon was horrified and demanded the recall of the edition and the excision of the offending pages. This was done and a second issue produced with asterisks marking where the passages had been. Ironically these honest, fearful, and touching lines are some of the best Sassoon ever wrote.
