About this Item: Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith, New York, 1930. First American edition of Graves' classic autobiography. Octavo, original red cloth. Advanced copy in the dust jacket without the price and the Paris Gun listed on the back flap, "To be published in February Probable Price, $3.50". Near fine in a very good dust jacket with some light wear to the crown and foot of the spine. Good-Bye to All That bids farewell not only to England and his English family and friends, but also to a way of life. Tracing his upbringing from his solidly middle-class Victorian childhood through his entry into the war at age twenty-one as a patriotic captain in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, this dramatic, poignant, often wry autobiography goes on to depict the horrors and disillusionment of the Great War, from life in the trenches and the loss of dear friends, to the stupidity of government bureaucracy and the absurdity of English class stratification. Paul Fussell has hailed it as "the best memoir of the First World War.". Seller Inventory # 2654

About this Item: Jonathan Cape, London, 1929. Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Lye, Len (illustrator). First Edition, First Impression. A very good copy in a good dust jacket by Len Lye, some minor 2 inch split to d/w hinge and wear to head of spine, not price clipped. This is a copy of the elusive true First Edition, First Issue. This edition with the infamous Sassoon poem on pp.341-343, removed from all later impressions and editions. The story of the suppression of this issue is well documented and most copies were apparently destroyed, it is generally believed that few survived. The book printed a poem Sassoon had written to Graves in rhyming letter form and Sassoon was mortified by this inclusion demanding the recall of the edition and the excision of the offending pages in the second impression, this was done and it is these later editions that are most frequently found. It is regarded that these honest and touching lines are some of the best Sassoon ever wrote. Original salmon pink cloth, spine gilt. Complete with the distinctive Len Lye dust wrapper. 448pp. It was in November of 1929 that Sassoon had written to a friend, "I deeply resent his printing my verse letter to him & shall threaten Cape with legal action (for breach of copyright) unless he undertakes to cut it out" Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall. About this Item: London: Jonathan Cape, 1929, 1929. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Bookplate to front pastedown. Spine a little rolled, dark spotting to top edge of text block. A very good copy indeed in the price-clipped jacket, spine panel slightly toned, ends of spine panel chipped, a couple of short closed tears to head of panels, tape repair to verso. Photographic portrait frontispiece, 7 plates. First edition, first impression, a rare first issue with the infamous Sassoon poem intact. The story of the suppression of this issue is well recorded. This work printed a poem that Sassoon had written to Graves in letter form. Sassoon was horrified and demanded the recall of the edition and the excision of the offending pages. This was done and a second issue produced with asterisks marking where the passages had been. Ironically these honest, fearful, and touching lines are some of the best Sassoon ever wrote. Higginson and Williams A32a. Seller Inventory # 125173
