About this Item: Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1959. First edition of the author's first book and winner of the National Book Award. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Philip Roth on the title page. Light rubbing to the bottom cloth, fine in a fine dust jacket without the usual toning to the spine. Jacket design by Sanford Roth. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A superior example. "Goodbye Columbus, a Houghton Mifflin Literary Award, is Philip Roth’s first book, and an impressive one. There is blood here and vigor, love and hate, irony and compassion. Mr. Roth has written a perceptive, often witty and frequently moving piece of fiction." The novella is accompanied by five short stories that range in tone from the iconoclastic to the astonishingly tender that illuminate the subterranean conflicts between parents and children and friends and neighbors in the American Jewish diaspora. Saul Bellow wrote upon review of Goodbye, Columbus, "Unlike those of us who come howling into the world, blind and bare, Mr. Roth appears with nails, hair, teeth, speaking coherently. He is skilled, witty, energetic and performs like a virtuoso." It was the basis for the 1969 film starring Richard Benjamin and Ali MacGraw, directed by Larry Peerce. The screenplay, by Arnold Schulman, won the Writers Guild of America Award. Seller Inventory # 2890

His first book, a collection of short fiction including the title novella -- which was the basis for a well-received movie in the Sixties -- and five short stories. About this Item: Andre Deutsch, London, 1959. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine+. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine-. First Impression. First Printing. Small 8vo; 157pp. Publisher's French blue cloth, spine lettered in gold; pictorial dust jacket priced at 10s/6d. About Fine, cloth bright and clean, gilt lettering brilliant, but with light foxing to preliminaries and top edge; in a Fine jacket with very minor professional restoration (involving none of the design or lettering) to reinforce several closed tears and to fill two trivial losses. A novella and five short stories, two of which, "The Defender of the Faith" and "The Conversion of The Jews," now widely anthologized and placed among Roth's best short fiction. "Intermingling comedy and tragedy, the hilarity and heartbreak of modern Jewish life, Columbus follows Roth's hero, Neil Klugman, as he struggles to cope with a burgeoning love affair, to tolerate his empty lifestyle and his barren surroundings in Newark, New Jersey, and to decide whether the materialistic goals he now espouses are worth pursuing." The first book from "arguably the greatest American master of fictional doppelgangers." (Literary Encyclopedia) Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors' works (our specialty). Note: With few exceptions (always noted), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Seller Inventory # BB0512

About this Item: Andre Deutsch, London, 1959. First British edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Philip Roth on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Adrian Bailey. A very sharp example. Goodbye, Columbus is the story of Neil Klugman and pretty, spirited Brenda Patimkin, he of poor Newark, she of suburban Short Hills, who meet one summer break and dive into an affair that is as much about social class and suspicion as it is about love. The novella is accompanied by five short stories that range in tone from the iconoclastic to the astonishingly tender and that illuminate the subterranean conflicts between parents and children and friends and neighbors in the American Jewish diaspora. Seller Inventory # 170

About this Item: Andre Deutsch, London, 1959. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Andre Deutsch, London 1959. 157 pages. 1st edition, 1st printing. An incredibly rare association copy. Before the legendary Herb Jaffe ran United Artists (film company) he ran a small boutique literary agency in NYC, Herb Jaffe Associates. In 1959, Herb Jaffe signed a promising young talent named Philip Roth. A short time later, a monumental piece of literary history was created and published: Goodbye, Columbus. Roth, who has long been short-listed for the Nobel prize began his prolific journey with Herb Jaffe Associates (Jaffe would also be responsible for signing a young Joseph Heller amongst others). Offered for sale is Philip Roth's 1st book, a 1959 1st edition, 1st printing with the rare ownership and provenance stamp of Herb Jaffe's agency on the FFEP. As an added bonus, a signed bookplate by Philip Roth is laid in (not attached). The bright and desirable illustrated DJ is beautiful. The DJ would grade fine if not for 1 or 2 tiny closed chips to edge of backstrip, a random faint mark on upper front of DJ and most minor soiling to rear of DJ. 10s6d net price intact on DJ flap (rear). The blue cloth of the book is in slightly lesser condition than the DJ as there are a couple of scuffs to the blue cloth on front panel with slight toning to edges and lightened color along the backstrip. Lightest rubbing at corners. An incredibly rare copy with associated significance!. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 000714
