About this Item: Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1934. Leather Binding. Condition: Near Fine. Bip Pares (illustrator). First British Edition. We offer a fine example of the first edition of this famous novel in a beautifully executed blue leather craft binding. The binding is not signed or dated, but was probably made soon after the book was published. The spine has five raised bands with gilt rules and is titled in gilt between the bands; the front and rear covers have a fine design of gilt rules; the 128 pages have all edges gilt and the headbands are hand-sewn in blue and white. The text is nicely designed with four full-page black and white illustrations, plus a decorative title page and two more drawings at the beginning and end of the book. The condition of the book is as follows: the spine is slightly faded; the blank page opposite the last text page has a small area of stain, which consists of a few little darkish spots, but this is not very obtrusive. Otherwise the binding is in fine condition and the text is also in bright, clean condition. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 001544

About this Item: Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1938. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First edition. Slightly cocked, near fine in very good dustwrapper with some soiling and the publisher's later reduced price label on the spine. Hilton's own adaptation of his novel, which was the basis for two films: the 1939 Sam Wood-directed version with Robert Donat (who beat out Clark Gable, Henry Fonda, and others for the Best Actor Oscar in what was probably Hollywood's best year ever), Greer Garson, and Paul Henreid and the 1969 remake directed by Herbert Ross with Peter O'Toole, Petula Clark, and Michael Redgrave. A very nice copy, and quite uncommon. Seller Inventory # 347263

About this Item: Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1934. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Bip Piers (illustrator). 1st Edition. First British Edition, First printing by definition, is near fine, bright, smooth copy with slight foxing; neatly tape-reinforced jacket somewhat soiled, somewhat frayed at edges, spine rubbed, faded and with 1" chip at top. A pleasing copy despite faults. (5net.) price on spine. Mr. Chips is the arch typical 19th century Englishman, caught up in old world tradition and charming adherence to those traditions. The book takes the reader to an England seen in old movies and stereotypical notions of how things were. Truth be told, many of those ironclad traditions still exist and many traditions hopefully will withstand the test of time. This is a rare and special collectible. Seller Inventory # 000303
