Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Signed by Dian Fossey on the title page and inscribed to former owners. Near Fine, with lean to spine, in a Near Fine dust jacket with light rubbing and fading to spine, light edge wear with several short tears, and light staining visible at the bottom edge of the rear flap and blank verso of the rear panel. An account of Fossey's research of gorillas at the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda, which she founded on the cold, dark, extremely muddy slopes on the Virunga Volcanoes. A prominent primatologist and an inspiration to conservationists worldwide, it is thought that her opposition to poaching led to her brutal murder in 1985, two years after the publication of this book. The Karisoke Research Center carries on, to this day. This book served as the basis for the 1988 film of the same name, starring Sigourney Weaver.

Condition: Fine in near fine jacket. First edition. Inscribed first printing of Fossey's landmark scientific memoir. The primatologist's famous account of her research and conservation work with the mountain gorillas of Rwanda, published just two years before her murder. Fossey, initially trained as a biologist, ultimately earned a degree in occupational therapy and made ingenious use of her prior work with (human) clients to gain a measure of trust from suspicious gorilla bands. Her opposition to poaching and destructive wildlife tourism was a major factor in saving mountain gorillas from extinction. A remarkable copy of a remarkable book. 9'' x 6''. Black quarter cloth with tan pictorial boards (gorilla stamped in black). In original unclipped ($19.95) dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers. Frontispiece illustration by Jay H. Matternes. Black and white photographs. xvii, [6], 326 pages. Inscription to title page: "All best wishes to Sue / Dian Fossey". Slightest bumping to corners. Light wear, minor creasing to jacket at head of spine.
