A near fine copy, the binding square and tight with a slight bump to the head of the spine, the contents, with a little faint spotting to the text block edge, are otherwise clean throughout and without stamps or inscriptions. Complete with the very lightly rubbed and creased, price-clipped original dustwrapper which is a touch faded to the spine. A working typescript and numerous photocopies for Haining's anthology of sensational stories taken from the pages of the Victorian Penny Dreadful. Haining provided an introduction and also introduced each story. All pages 25.5 x 20.5 cm. About pp. 10. Preliminaries including versions of title page, contents page, brief introduction etc. pp. 8. Introduction with corrections and stapled passages inserted. About pp. [112]. Rough typed introductions with corrections for 23 stories and appendices as published with occasional additional material attached (several handwritten notes, in one case printed or photocopied copies of the story. Haining has also typed a couple of the stories included in the pagination). Stories that appeared in 'The Shilling Shockers: Stories of Terror from the Gothic Bluebooks' published in 1978 by Victor Gollancz. About pp. [82]. Includes introductions to stories (with corrections, handwritten notes and some photocopies) and sometimes the story itself. Not all were used in the publication. Some of those included are Edgar Alan Poe's story 'Arthur Gordon Pym', 'The Vindictive Monk' by Isaac Crookenden, 'The Mysterious Novice' by Sarah Wilkinson, 'Captive of the Banditti' by Dr Nathan Drake and A. N. Other and other anonymous works on The Spectre Mother, Dr Faustus, The Old Tower of Frankenstein, Witchcraft, Vampires, Ghosts and Tales of Terror. Other material includes about 23 photocopies relating to the subject, a couple of pages of handwritten notes and a couple of typed letters, one from Livia Gollancz about illustrations for this second publication dated January 25th 1978, the other from D. L. Philips (to whom 'The Penny Dreadful' book is dedicated) dated 21st March 1972 providing a useful book contact. Very good. Very good.
