About this Item: 1881. NEW JERSEY. LAWS. The Grants, Concessions, and Original Constitutions of the Province of New Jersey, the Acts passed during the Proprietary Governments, and other Material Transactions . By Aaron Leaming and Jacob Spicer. Philadelphia: W. Bradford [i.e., Somerville, 1881]. [4], 763 p. Original cloth, red and black leather spine labels (labels chipped). Reprint of the 1758 edition, with a brief editorial note by A. Van Doren Honeyman. The original reprint of "Leaming and Spicer," the classic compilation of the foundation documents of New Jersey from 1664 to 1702 and the only printed source of the session laws from 1668 to 1701. Thanks to Honeyman's antiquarian bent, the reprint is page-for-page with the original edition and in pseudo-facsimile, so a page citation to the original is also a correct citation to the reprint. A scarce book. Seller Inventory # 6868

About this Item: 1758. NEW JERSEY. LAWS. The Grants, Concessions, and Original Constitutions of the Province of New-Jersey. The Acts Passed During the Proprietary Governments, and other Material Transactions . By Aaron Leaming and Jacob Spicer. Philadelphia: W. Bradford, Printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty for the Province of New-Jersey, [1758]. Sm. fol. [4], 3-763 p. Lacks A1 (section half title). Bound in mid-nineteenth century full law calf, red leather spine labels (front hinge broken, rather scuffed). Stain on title page, sporatic spots and stains throughout (chiefly marginal), faint old blindstamp of a now defunct law library on a few pages. Aside from the missing half title, a complete and very respectable--but not beautiful--copy, very reasonably priced. Joseph J. Ely's copy. The classic compilation of the foundation documents of New Jersey from 1664 to 1702, accompanied by the session laws from 1668 to 1701. Authorized by the legislature in 1752, the work was assembled over the next six years chiefly by Samuel Nevill and Samuel Smith, and was seem through the press by Aaron Leaming and Jacob Spicer. Of all the compilations of New Jersey laws from the 1752 Nevill volume onward, the "Grants and Concessions" is the scarcest. See Felcone, New Jersey Books, 156, for a detailed ten-page study of this highly important colonial New Jersey book. Evans 8205. Seller Inventory # 13309

About this Item: W[illiam] Bradford [1758], Philadelphia, 1758. Hardcover. First Edition. Folio (7-1/4" x 11-1/2") bound in contemporary calf leather with a decorative blindstamped border, recently rebacked with a new gilt-lettered and decorated spine, preserving original paste-downs and free endpapers; (4), 763 pages. Title within rule border, decorative woodcut head- and tail-pieces. An important compilation of the fundamental New Jersey charters and session laws of the proprietary period (1664 to 1702), up to Lord Cornbury's commission and instructions as Royal Governor, when New Jersey became a crown colony under Queen Anne. Publication was ordered by the New Jersey Assembly in 1752, but two years were required to collect the documents to be included, while the typesetting and printing took Bradford an additional three. By the date of publication, some 170 copies had been subscribed. This title was the largest volume issued from Bradford's press and one of the largest from any eighteenth-century American press. Evans 8205; Sabin 39527. Early owner name on the title page and early twentieth century names on the front pastedown. Title page with a few repaired tears; two adjoining leaves of text lacking and supplied with facsimiles. Very Good and scarce. Seller Inventory # 016251
