Item Description: Viking Press [1939], New York, 1939. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. 8vo. One of ten leatherbound presentation copies signed on a tipped-in colophon page by Steinbeck. The history of this rare and largely unknown special edition is spelled out by Jackson Benson in his definitive 1984 biography of Steinbeck. At the time, the now-famous author (430,000 copies printed and the movie rights sold in 1939) though of liberal bent, was loath to lend his name to leftist causes. (Down the line he would campaign vigorously and compose speeches for Adlai Stevenson's 1950s presidential campaigns.) Benson writes: "The other, most important, exception that he made to his rule was the 'John Steinbeck Committee' formed by Helen Gahagan Douglas and other Hollywood celebrities to raise money for migrant relief. To aid their cause, he had ten copies of 'Grapes' leather bound with an extra page tipped into the front that said, 'This book, one of an edition of ten, made and bound at the request of John Steinbeck for presentation to ------.' After the books were auctioned off at a banquet, he filled in the name of the purchaser and signed his own." This copy was presented on the colophon page: "Mr. & Mrs. Edward G. Robinson / inscribed with great pleasure / John Steinbeck." The film star, then at his professional zenith, contributed more than $250,000 (in 75-year-old dollars) to 850 causes and charitable groups between 1939 and 1949. Thus, a splendid association copy between two notable political activists. More compelling, these ten copies constitute the only limited and signed edition of this enduring literary and film classic. The 1940 movie earned director John Ford and actress Jane Darwell Academy Awards. Not in Goldstone & Payne. Fifth edition, published one month after the first edition. Bookseller Inventory # 23869

Henry Award for short story authorship in 1934 and taught at Columbia University during the late 1940s and early 1950s. He corresponded frequently with Steinbeck. He and his wife Mary were evidently involved in discussions about the book at the time of its composition, as Steinbeck sent them a postcard in September 1938 to announce his choice of title. Item Description: Viking Press, New York, 1939. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Inscribed by the author "For Barrett Kiesling, with kind regards | John Steinbeck." Kiesling has also written his name, dated in April 24, 1939 (ten days after the official publication date), and in pencil "MGM Studios Culver City Calif." is written. Kiesling was the Publicity Director at MGM for roughly 30 years (1928 - 1955), he also wrote a book on film, "Talking Pictures," published in 1937. MGM released a film version of Steinbeck's Tortilla Flat (written in 1935) in 1942, so it seems likely that Steinbeck's relationship with Kiesling began in the mid to late 1930s. Kiesling, being a collector, amassed a sizable collection of signed and inscribed first editions from noteworthy authors of his day. True presentation copies of "The Grapes of Wrath" are scarce. A Near Fine copy of the book, with a few little nicks or creases to pages and bottom of text block a bit dusty (from resting on the shelf). In a Near Fine dust jacket, slightly toned and rubbed on the spine and one small tear at the top of the rear panel. Corners of rear flap clipped. An excellent copy, nonetheless.Steinbeck's classic account of the Dust Bowl and Depression era struggle of the Joad family, "The Grapes of Wrath" is a quintessential American classic. It would win both the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize committee would refer to it as Steinbeck's "epic chronicle" upon giving him the award in 1962. The book was the best selling novel of 1939 and became instantly controversial upon its release for its depiction of farmers and worker rights. Of course, "The Grapes of Wrath" was also adapted into the classic 1940 film, directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda, which was one of the first films selected by The Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. "It is a very long novel, the longest that Steinbeck has written, and yet it reads as if it had been composed in a flash, ripped off the typewriter and delivered to the public as an ultimatum." (Contemporary New York Times Review). Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Bookseller Inventory # 1664

Item Description: The Viking Press (1939), New York, 1939. Hardcover. First Edition. Second Printing Before Publication of this winner of the Pulitzer Prize. This copy belonged to screenwriter Jerry Cady (A WING AND A PRAYER; LAURA; FOREVER AMBER; CALL NORTHSIDE 777) to whom the author has INSCRIBED and SIGNED this book. According to Cady's daughter, the two got into a huge argument at Murphy's bar one night about the book and Cady said that this kind of thing didn't go on in America. Steinbeck then INSCRIBED the book on the dedication page "To Jerry Cady/As far as I know it, this is what happens to them/John Steinbeck." This book shows some evidence that it was carried to Murphy's on more than one occasion. The exterior shows minor edgewear, mostly at the bottom edge. The front endpaper is mostly pasted down to the front pastedown, but what can be seen shows the ink stamp of the Boulevard Circulating Library on Hollywood Blvd. The half-title page has a few small tears, and there is an old dampstain on the outer margin edge of the first few pages, including the dedication page, but not touching the Steinbeck inscription. Accompanying the book are a few pages of Cady's scrapbook that includes family photos and photos of his boat, his driver's license and Twentieth Century Fox ID card, and the 8 November 1948 headline of the LOS ANGELES EXPRESS: "Screen Writer Dies in Mystery." Cady died from an overdose of sleeping pills on his yacht off Catalina Island. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1945 for his screenplay for A WING AND A PRAYER. A beautiful Steinbeck presentation in a Good only copy. Bookseller Inventory # 014780

Item Description: Viking Press, New York, 1939. A splendid copy, bound in finely woven buckram cloth and stamped brightly in brown ink on the front boards and on the spine. Very clean and tight throughout with yellow topstaining. In a complete first edition dust jacket illustrated by Elmer Hader with the original price of $2.75 at the top of the front inside flap and "First Edition" in blue capital letters at the bottom of the flap. With some very light edge-wear and a touch of rubbing to the corners. There is also a small area of dampstain on the verso at the bottom of the spine, but it is not apparent when looking at the richly-colored art work. A superb, collector's copy of this modern classic and Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Set during the Great Depression, The Grapes of Wrath focuses on the Joads, a poor family of tenant farmers driven from their Oklahoma home by drought, economic hardship, and changes in financial and agricultural industries. Due to their nearly hopeless situation, and in part because they were trapped in the Dust Bowl, the Joads set out for California. Along with thousands of other "Okies", they sought jobs, land, dignity, and a future. The Grapes of Wrath is frequently read in American high school and college literature classes due to its historical context and enduring legacy. A celebrated Hollywood film version, starring Henry Fonda and directed by John Ford, was made in 1940. First Edition with "First Published in April, 1939" on the copyright page and no subsequent printings listed. Bookseller Inventory # 196

Item Description: NY: Viking, (1939), 1939. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition of the great American novel of the American Depression, and the Nobel laureate's magnum opus, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and arguably one of the greatest novels of all time. Basis, of course, for the classic 1940 John Ford Academy Award-winning film. Not a book to hold up terribly well, this copy is simply very good, yet in a much better than very good dust jacket. Not price-clipped, nor bearing the scarce First Edition slug, this copy, bearing the wonderfully pictorial bookplate of famed silent (and sound) screen star Monte Blue, remains exceedingly respectable and presentable.
