Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. More than 200 years ago, two brothers from Kassel, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, published the first volume of their collection of German folktales. Over time the stories in their collection grew until finally they numbered 200 fairy tales and ten legends. What was initially an attempt to preserve German traditions for posterity is today the most widely read collection of stories after the Bible. From Snow White to Cinderella and Rapunzel to Rumpelstiltskin, the Brothers Grimm left behind a canon of fairy tales that have become classics of children's literature, part of the UNESCO world heritage, and an indispensable piece of our history and culture.Hans Christian Andersen's own life seemed to be out of a fairy tale-Charles Dickens was among his friends and admirers, and European princes held him in high regard. Through determination, talent, many a fortunate coincidence, and an exuberant imagination, he came out of impoverished circumstances to write himself into world literature. A fairytale kingdom without Andersen would be very impoverished itself and would have to do without characters such as the Snow Queen, the Princess and the Pea, Thumbelina or the Little Match Girl, but also many previously inanimate items which Andersen brought to life: silver shillings and darning needles, and especially his Steadfast Tin Soldier. The Grimms' and Andersen's tales have inspired generations of artists, and each fairy tale in this volume is colorfully interpreted by a famous illustrator: legends such as Kay Nielsen (a leading exponent of the Golden Age of Illustration that ended in the 1920s), the Arts and Crafts master Walter Crane, Arthur Rackham, and the Swiss commercial artist Herbert Leupin. Alongside are silhouettes from historical publications as well as new vignettes that were made especially for this edition, which dance across the pages in an intricate shadow play. Introductory essays, on the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm as reflected in art and on Andersen as the heart and soul of the modern fairy tale, complement these flights of fancy, as do the short summaries on each fairy tale and artists' biographies. This double-sided book contains the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm on one side and Hans Christian Andersen's tales on the other, each with its own cover. The following fairy tales are included:The Brothers Grimm:The Frog Prince, The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, The Brave Little Tailor, Cinderella, Mother Holle, Little Red Riding Hood, The Bremen Town Musicians, The Shoemaker and the Elves, Tom Thumb's Travels, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Rumpelstiltskin, The Three Feathers, The Golden Goose, The Goose Girl, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Star Coins, The Hare and the Hedgehog, Puss 'n BootsHans Christian Andersen:The Princess and the Pea, The Nightingale, The Swineherd, The Emperor's New Clothes, Twelve by Mail Coach, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Snow Queen, Ole Shut-Eye, The Ugly Duckling, Little Ida's Flowers, The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep, The Flying Trunk, The Little Match Girl, The Tinderbox The world's most beloved fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen are here in one precious anthology. Classically illustrated, each tale has explanatory essays, introductions, and an appendix with extended artist biographies. This collection is a feast for the eyes and a pleasure to read. A must for every family library. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Once upon a time, two brothers wished to preserve their German folklore in a collection of tales that they believed had been handed down for generations. When they began in 1812 they had just 86 stories that rather harshly reflected the difficult life of the European peasantry. Subsequent editions would grow to hold over 200 tales. As time passed, the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, with all of its royalty, magical creatures, and brave adventures, were destined to become one of the most famous examples of European folklore ever written. This compilation includes sixty-four of their most famous tales including 'The Frog Prince', 'Rapunzel', 'Hansel and Gretel', 'Little Red Riding Hood', 'Tom Thumb', 'Rumpelstiltskin', 'Cinderella', and 'Snow White'. The stories of this compilation are drawn from the translations of Edgar Taylor, Marian Edwardes, Lucy Crane, and Margaret Hunt. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and is beautifully illustrated by Arthur Rackham.

  • Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Originally collected from German peasantry in the early 1800's, Grimm's Fairy Tales are known and adored the world over: Hansel and Grethel, Snow White, Red Riding Hood and the Sleeping Beauty are all part of everyone's childhood. Their numerous iterations in fiction, theatre and latterly in cinema and cartoon formats have made them even more widely appreciated, but all such spin-offs have altered or edited the original tales, sometimes beyond recognition. This new Aziloth edition re-unites the reader with Grimm's original characters. We meet the true Snow-White and Sleeping Beauty, and come face to face with cruel stepmothers, strange beasts and jealous queens in full-blooded tales of danger, wickedness and shining virtue. Children are naturally attracted to such powerful parables which, while delighting their young minds with magic spells, wizards and giants, effortlessly teach them invaluable life lessons distilled from generations past. As Professor Joseph Campbell so aptly said ' The folk tale is the picture-language of the soul'. All 209 tales from the original publication are included, plus 10 'Children's Legends', and the book's appeal is further enhanced with 29 illustrations by the incomparable Arthur Rackham, 23 of which are full page spreads.

Hard Cover. Condition: Fair. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). First Edition. 1909 date at title page. Scarce first edition from Doubleday, Page & Co. Large volume at over 4 lbs. Brown matte pictorial boards, gilt cover titles and design, partial leather spine wrap, some edge, corner wear, rub. Spine mended and reinforced with dark brown cloth book adhesive. Heavy stock deckled pages, good with attractive toning. Bind intact, square; some portions starting. Includes the beautifully ethereal imagery of Arthur Rackham. Thirty-nine vibrant, yet beautifully subdued, tipped-in color plates on stiff matte setting with most tissued captions adjacent. True mounted individual plates in this volume. Also, fifty-five full and partial page black and white illustrations by Rackham with headers, tailpieces and decorative ornamentation throughout. Illustrated endpapers at front and back; back illus. endpaper missing. Antiquarian signature pencilled at front endpaper: "Richard Ely Morse." Facsimile b&w print of removed plate adjacent p. 188: "'O Grandmother, what big ears you have got,' she said." Near good first edition of this rarity filled with classically beautiful imagery. A wondrous collection of sixty tales including the much loved "The Bremen Town Musicians, The Frog Princess, The Goosegirl, Rapunzel, Hansel and Grethel, Red Riding Hood, Tom Thumb, Rumpelstiltskin, The Wolf and the Seven Kids, The Elves and the Shoemaker," etc. Arthur Rackham was one of the great illustrators of the early twentieth century, a period which is referred to as the "golden age" in British book design. His works were produced in both limited and mass market editions as there was a large market for ornately illustrated books before the First World War. Rackham used a unique style, thought to mix European and East Asian influences, that involved both pen and India Ink as well as watercolor. His work was displayed all over Europe - and received awards at International Exhibitions in Milan and Barcelona and Rackham would influence heavily many illustrators, especially those of children's books, who came after him. "Rackham's illustrations to Grimm, Hans Andersen and Poe show him at his most imaginative and observant of human nature, while his gnomes, fairies and gnarled anthropomorphic trees in Peter Pan or A Midsummer Night's Dream represent his more fantastic side. He was - and remains - a soloist in front of an orchestra, a player with the responsibility to interpret and add a personal lustre to great works with variations of infinite subtlety and grace. Printed in Great Britain by T. and A. Constable, Printers to His Majesty at the Edinburgh University Press. 325 pages. Insured post. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.
