About this Item: Victor Gollancz, London, 1967. Original Blue Hardback. First UK Edition. 1962. First English translation. 192 pp. Many black and white illustrations and 5 maps. This is an account of the conqueirng of Jannu in the Himalayas, and the 32nd highest mountain in the world. The authors tell the story from the reconaissance led by Jean Franco in 1954, the first attempt in 1959, and the eventual success in 1962 with an expedition led by Lionel Terray. This is an ex-library copy and has the usual library marks and stamps. The boards have shelf wear with tape stains and the spine ends and corners are bumped. The spine is faded and there are traces of a library reference number near the bottom of the spine. The contents are secure and clean apart from usual library stamps including some on the front free endpaper, title page, and copyright page. There are traces of removed lables on the rear endpapers. There are tape stains running down the front and rear free endpapers, the half-title page and the last page of the book. A good tight copy. Size: 8.7" Tall. Seller Inventory # Mount030

FIRST EDITION -- SIGNED by Lionel Terray --- CONDITION: Relatively clean covers, solid binding, crease mark upper front outside corner and very light crease mark upper rear corner, pages not creased, no owner marks or writing on pages. This item measures 271mm tall x 207mm, and has 14 pages advertisements (some numbered with roman numerals) + 32pp + 6 pages advertisements (some numbered with roman numerals), 55 b/w photos (13 of which are in ads but are of the expedition on the mountain), 1 map, 1 diagram. Text in french, no english edition. The first 14 pages and the last 6 pages are ads for equipment suppliers of the expedition. The text consists of introduction summarizing the expedition by Lucien Devies, account of the 1959 and 1962 expeditions by Franco, account of 1962 expedition from base camp to camp VI by Lionel Terray, account of 1962 expedition above camp VI by Pierre Leroux, attacking the summit block by Terray, reaching the summit by Paul Keller, team victory by Terray. This is uncommon and is not in mountaineering bibliographies. It was obviously made to present to suppliers of the expedition. Original photo-illustrated stable-bound wrapper (b/w photo of Jannu on front over blue background, white lettering lower front, white rear cover with b/w photo of climber on fixed line framed with blue lines).
