Item Description: (Johann Gutenberg: Mainz) (1455), 1455. One sheet of watermarked paper, 15.5 x 11", with two columns of 42 lines each, printed in black Gothic letter, in black with red and blue, one brown spot (about 1" in diameter) over one column (front and back), some worming in one margin, old glue marks in other margin else a nice, bright leaf hinges into the leather-bound book, A NOBLE FRAGMENT: Being a Leaf of The Gutenberg Bible 1450-1455, With a Bibliographical Essay by A. Edward Newton", published by Gabriel Wells: NY 1921, in a slipcase. The leaf is from Chapters 11 (verses 15-54) and 12 (verses 1-23) of the Gospel of St. Luke in which Jesus speaks about Beelzebub and evil spirits, the lamp under a bushel basket, etc. (The previous leaf would have been Jesus teaching the Apostles how to pray the "Our Father"). The Gutenberg Bible, of course, was the first book ever to be printed using moveable type, an invention that revolutionized society by placing literature into the hands (ultimately) of the common man. There are only 22 known complete copies of the Gutenberg Bible known to exist, and the price of one. Gabriel Wells was one of two 20th Century U.S. Publishers to take apart a Gutenberg Bible to sell individual leafs (the other being Charles Scribner's Sons), and the leafs are now SCARCE and valuable. Even the 1961 facsimile edition goes for thousands of dollars! Here's your chance to own a piece of history, a leaf from the oldest printed book ever!. Bookseller Inventory # 99-5938

Item Description: Pageant Books, Inc, Paterson, New Jersey, and New York, 1961. 464 x 330 mm. (18 1/4 x 13"). Two volumes. ONE OF 1,000 NUMBERED SETS (996 for sale, this set unnumbered). Very pleasing smooth calf, with double fillet border, single fillet panel, and cornerpieces in blind, raised bands with gilt rules, spine panels reiterating cornerpieces, dark red and brown morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Each text page with rubrication in red and blue, small initials with trailing flourishes in margins, THE OPENING LEAVES OF THE VARIOUS BOOKS WITH ELABORATE INITIALS AND MARGINAL EMBELLISHMENT IN SEVERAL COLORS AND GOLD, chapter initials in red or blue. A virtually mint copy, as new internally. Only the second Gutenberg facsimile to be printed, this production is based on the earlier Insel Verlag facsimile (Leipzig, 1913-14), which was derived from the Gutenberg copies at Berlin and Fulda (considered the most beautifully illuminated of all known copies). It is hand bound and printed on 100% rag paper, with text leaves lithographed, and illuminated leaves produced by sheet-fed gravure. The quality of the materials and workmanship that went into this project suggest the magnificence and significance of the object being replicated. So far as we can tell, the publisher issued this facsimile in cloth and in red morocco, so our calf binding might well have been specially done--it is not only in virtually mint condition, but it is also attractive and appropriate. Beautiful, pristine copy of this limited edition (this is no. 950) presented in matching red publisher's leather slipcase in perfect condition. In the back, there is a fairly long, very personal inscription written by Don Cleveland Norman to personal friends. It is dated and was written in Italy. Also, there is a publisher's brochure tipped in with some correction made by Dr. Norman. The book is beautifully illustrated and designed, with numerous maps, photos, and drawings. This book did not receive an "as new" rating because of the inscription. Bookseller Inventory # 002990
