Attached to the front paste-down are two special bindings that were offered (perhaps not as popular; Quercus has never encountered them). In the rear are publisher's adverts and the ledger for orders (alas, all blank!). There is no publication location, but per WorlCat, Excelsior was located in Milwaukee. A very interesting piece of historical context, scarce, but showing its age. Bumped, a bit cocked, somewhat loose but holding. No dustjacket. That would be a special order! Issued in 1890 by several publishers for subscription sales, this is the Excelsior edition, First Edition Thus, First Printing. 802 pages; 6 1/2 x 9 inches, original tan cloth, pictorial boards blindstamped in black and gold; text includes a frontispiece portrait photo of Stanley, a colored fold-out map (p.33), and numerous black & white illustrations. Much of the black and gold now flaked from front cover and spine, moderate wear at edges and corners, some light soiling. End pages show light foxing and soiling, with a faint number written in center of front pastedown. Text edges are somewhat soiled, pages llightly age-tanned in margins, o/w boards and text are clean, complete and unmarked. Binding is tight and square. A very collectable copy.
