Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1st printings of the first Canadian hardcover editions of The Handmaid's Tale (Toronto: M&S, 1985 - 0771008139) and, its sequel, The Testaments (Toronto: M&S, 2019 - 9780771009433). This copy of The Testaments is autographed by Atwood on a preliminary page. ALSO INCLUDED is The Testaments Canvas Tote Bag, which shares the jacket art and excerpts the line "Under his eye". This example of The Handmaid's Tale is not signed. Cream cloth boards and maroon cloth binding with maroon end papers and cream titles. The book is near fine. It is tight with no markings by a previous owner or retailer. Typical of this edition, the maroon binding shows shelf wear at the heel and crown of the spine, and the heel of the book's spine has softened. The exposed page edges are unblemished but mildly tanned. The corners of the boards are blunted but not bruised. The bottom edge of the front paste down was torn when extra paper was removed due to an error at the binding stage. The price intact jacket has darkened, and a 3 x 8 inch section of the front panel is sunned, next to the spine. There are two one-inch tears in the top edge of the back panel, one with associated wrinkles. The heel and crown of the jacket's spine have softened, as have the folds in the jacket. The edges of the flaps are crisp. The Testaments is the edition that is pre-signed on a preliminary page, with a sticker on the back panel of the jacket that bears the ISBN for the signed edition and which covers the ISBN for the trade edition printed on the jacket. Full navy blue cloth with decorated end papers and silver titles. The book is tight and unread with sharp corners. The jacket is bright, crisp and price intact with sharp edges. The Testaments was co-winner of the Booker Prize. Also available from this bookseller are multiple examples of the author's back list. Buyer will be asked to pay the actual cost of postage for the set due to weight. Signed by Author(s).

Ken Cunningham (illustrator). One of the most chilling cautionary tales of the 20th century, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood is a tour de force of dystopian fiction. It is the world of the near future, and Offred is a Handmaid in the home of the Commander and his wife. She is allowed out only once a day to the market, she is not permitted to read and she is hoping the Commander makes her pregnant; as her very existence is only valued if her ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she was an independent woman, had a job of her own, a husband and child. Now those days seem far away. For in their wake, the land that was once the United States has become the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy that has reacted to social unrest and a sharply declining birth rate by reverting to and going beyond the repressive intolerance of the original Puritans. The regime takes the Book of Genesis absolutely at its word, with bizarre consequences for the women and men in its population. Unpredictable, horrifying, and altogether convincing, The Handmaid's Tale is an uncompromising portrait of totalitarianism and institutional misogyny. The novel explores themes of subjugated women in a patriarchal society, loss of female agency and individuality, and the various means by which they resist and attempt to gain individuality and independence. NUMBERED EDITION 6" x 9" trim size. 408 pages. Limited to 250 copies. Note, this is a PC copy. Bound in black Harmatan and Oakridge goatskin, and red Japanese cloth. Cover and spine are foil blocked in three colors. New exclusive introduction by Sophie Mackintosh. New exclusive afterword by Jan Garden Castro. Six full color illustrations by Ken Cunningham. Signed by Margaret Atwood, Sophie Mackintosh, Jan Garden Castro and Ken Cunningham. Endsheets are printed letterpress on Hahnemühle Bugra. Printed letterpress on Mohawk Superfine. Housed in a quarter Japanese cloth cigar-box enclosure with handmade paste paper sides by Marie Kelzer. Bookmark with all pre-orders. This is a PC copy - identical to a regular numbered copy in every way. Near fine condition - small flaw in the leather binding and small dent on the enclosure. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1st printings of the first Canadian hardcover editions of The Handmaid's Tale (Toronto: M&S, 1985) and its sequel The Testaments (Toronto: M&S, 2019). Both copies are SIGNED by the author with no inscription. Included is The Testaments canvas tote bag which matches the design of the book and excerpts the line UNDER HIS EYE. This copy of The Testaments is the Canadian autographed edition SIGNED with a black fountain pen on a preliminary page. The special edition is denoted by an ISBN number unique to it which is printed on a sticker affixed to the back panel of the jacket. Full navy blue cloth with decorated end papers and silver titles. It is unread in fine/fine condition. The bottom corner of the back board is rubbed. This copy of The Handmaid's Tale is SIGNED by the author with a black ballpoint pen on the half-title page. That's a strong indication that she signed this copy at publication, whereas when she was presented with any book at an autograph session she would sign on the title page. Cream cloth boards and maroon cloth binding with white end papers and cream titles. LAID IN is a bookmark produced by the publisher to promote the 30th anniversary of the publication of The Handmaid's Tale. A well-preserved example. The top corner of the front board has softened, and the top corner of the back board is rubbed. Shelf wear to the edges of the heel and crown of the book's spine has resulted in color loss from the maroon binding, which is typical of the first edition. Circular blind stamp at the bottom corner of the dedication page. A previous owner left a newspaper clipping - a contemporary review - between pages 108 and 109, and the acid in the paper tanned those pages, and the tanning is present with decreasing visibility on several pages on either side of 108/109. The offending clipping has been removed from the book and folded in a mylar sleeve and will be included for posterity. The text is not obscured (see photo). The book has a slight spine roll. The jacket is crisp and price intact, and the artwork is bright. Darkening of the spine and folds and the top edge of the front panel with a small blotch from moisture visible in the middle of the spine. The heel and crown of the spine of the jacket have softened, with minute tears in the heel and chips lost from the crown. There is one more tiny tear in the top edge of the back panel, just inside the fold, which is mostly visible from the reverse side. There is a small blemish in the surface of the back panel which affects the author's B&W photo. The edges of the flaps and panels are quite sharp, and the color of the flaps compares favorably with the back panel. The package consists of first printings of the first Canadian hardcover editions of The Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments signed by the author without inscription plus The Testaments tote bag, and it is offered at a price lower than numerous listings on the site for just The Handmaid's Tale with a signed bookplate or an authorial inscription or a special edition of The Testaments on its own. Also available from this bookseller are multiple autographed Canadian first printings of books from the author's back list. Signed by Author(s).
