Hardcover. Condition: Fine (but.). Dust Jacket Condition: near fine. First edition. 416pp, illustrated with photographs, some in colour, and maps and charts. Contents very fresh and clean. In the original binding of green buckram, spine titled in gilt. Very bright, fresh, and sharp. In the protected unclipped Robert Gilmor jacket, fresh and bright to the front, slightly knocked to the top edge, and with some fading to the spine. Unfortunately, the book was cased upside-down: so that if the text and the jacket are the right way up, peel back the jacket and the gilt spine titling and NN logo are shown to be the wrong way up. A very nice copy - but with a twist.

First edition, 1990. The book has the bookplate of Eric Hosking to the front pastedown (bird photographer and photographic editor of the New Naturalist library 1943 - 91). The bookplate was posthumously imposed by David Hosking, son and professional collaborator of Eric Hosking. Hardback. 416pp. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. The Hebrides is an area of great natural beauty, which draws back thousands of visitors year after year to its wonderful scenery and abundant wildlife. In a style that is both readable and informative Drs J. M. and I. L. Boyd cover every aspect of the islands. Beginning with a clear explanation of the geology, climate and hydrography, they move on to a fascinating description of the many varied habitats, from the sea and inland waters through to woodlands and moor and hill. Part II of the book deals with the characteristics of individual islands and their species; Part II discussed the islands in the context of their relation to people - starting with the old naturalists, and ending on a more topical note with the current interest in conservation. Foreword by HRH Prince Philip. 21 colour photographs, over 150 photographs in black & white. Jacket design by Robert Gillmor. Book in fine condition. Dust jacket near fine. Unclipped. Very small and faint creases to upper corners of flaps at folds. Some colour fade to the blue on the spine and to the butterscotch colour of the heads of the gannets on the spine. Book.
