Item Description: Paris: Vincent, 1767., 1767. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. xlviii, 540 pp, 2 leaves [ads]; xvi, 606 pp, 1 leaf [errata]. Recent two-toned cloth. Small tear in middle of third leaf of Vol. I. Very Good. First Edition. "Distinguished already by his studies in normal anatomy, in Paris he [Lieutaud] cultivated freely a developing taste for morbid anatomy. He included his own most interesting dissections in his Historia Anatomica Medica (1767), a tremendous collection of post-mortem observations from the literature of the past, rivalling that of Bonet. The descriptions are objective. . . . It is a written museum, collected out of three centuries, and the last of the many books of this class. The edition by Portal is probably the most convenient source today for the necropsies of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. For teaching purposes, Lieutaud correlated in parallel columns symptoms and what he considered the usual morbid anatomical basis. . . . It was a monumental work, but out of date the day it came off the press, for the De Sedibus et Causis Morborum of Morgagni had already been written" (Long, History of Pathology, 2d ed., pp. 66-67). "Lieutaud received his medical degree from Aix and did postgraduate work at Montpellier. He returned to serve as professor of anatomy at Aix and, with the help of Sénac, became chief physician to King Louis XV in the early 1770s and later performed similar duties for King Louis XVI. Lieutaud was deeply interested in and promoted the basic fundamental aspects of medicine in his teaching and practice. He also felt that physicians should place their greatest emphasis on observation and practice rather than in theory and speculation. As a result of his beliefs regarding medical practice he devoted considerable effort to postmortem examinations. He used the results of his work in the study of both normal and pathological anatomy, striving to determine the relationships between the postmortem findings and the dead individual's symptoms. His clinical practice included inoculation against smallpox and he made many reports to the Académie Royale des Sciences on such subjects as hydatids of the thyroid; hydrocephalus; laryngeal polyps; empyema of the frontal sinus; pathological anatomy of the heart, stomach, and spleen; osteoma of the posterior fossa; and pathology of the gall bladder. In the present work, edited by Antoine Portal (1742-1832), he reports on his postmortem findings in over 3500 autopsies. In an extensive index in Volume II, Lieutaud relates symptomatology to his postmortem findings" (Heirs of Hippocrates 865). See Garrison-Morton 396 for Lieutaud's 1742 work Essais anatomiques: "Lieutaud rectified many anatomical errors, described carefully the structure and relations of the heart and its cavities, and added to the contemporary knowledge concerning the bladder. The trigonum vesicae is named 'Lieutaud's trigone'." D.S.B. 8: 352-54. Bookseller Inventory # 13983
