About this Item: Lugduni Batavorum: Ex Officina Elseviriana, 1639., 1639. Quarto. 12ff., 636pp., [2]ff. *1-3*4, A1-4L4 Title-page in red-and-black. With printer's device on the title-page. Parallel text in Persian and Latin. Contemporary calf, rebacked. From the collection of Johannes Alberti (1698-1762), a minister and professor at the University of Leiden and Adrian Oudemans, author of Bibliotheca Oudemanniana. Willems 490; Graesse VII, 482; Rahir 486 & 487; Smitskamp 311; Zenker BO i, 1678; De Backer-Sommervogel VIII, 1340; Berghman, Impressions Elzeviriennes 74. The work is among the earliest printed books with text in Persian. The Historia Christi Persice ("The Life of the Messiah") had been composed in Portuguese and translated into Persian by Xavier, a missionary resident at the court of Akbar, the Mughal emperor of India. "Akbar was delighted with the treatise, and insisted on Aziz Koka reading it aloud to him. That nobleman, who must have hated the task, made the best of a bad business, and asked that a second copy might be prepared for his own use. The actual manuscript presented to Akbar in 1602 is said to be that now in the Bodlean Library" (Smith, V.A., Akbar, The Great Mogul, 1919, p. 291). Louis De Dieu made this translation into Latin and published it in parallel with the Persian text. Gospel paraphrase translated into Persian from Xavier's Portugese original with Latin translation and notes by Ludovico De Dieu on facing pages. Bound with: Dieu, Louis de. Rudimenta Linguæ Persicæ . accedunt duo priora capita Geneseos, ex Persica translatione Iac. Tawusi. Lugduni Batavorum: Ex Officina Elseviriana, 1639. Octavo. 4ff., 95pp. []4, A4-M4. Willems 477; Rahir 473; Berghman 694. Dieu was an orientalist scholar attached to Leyden University, having been born in Flessingen in 1590. For a long time this clear and simple work was the only source of knowledge of the Persian language in Europe, and Xavier, Jerome. Historia S. Petri Persice Conscripta, Simulque Multis Modis Contimanata. Latine reddita, et brevibus Animadversionibus notata a Ludovico de Dieu. Lugduni Batavorum: Ex Officina Elseviriana, 1639. Quarto. 4ff., 144pp. +4, A4-S4. Title-page in red-and-black. With printer's device on the title-page. About this Item: Leiden, Elsevier, 1639, 1639. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 4to. (24), 636, (8) pp. (With:) [Dastan-i San Bidru]. Historia S. Petri Persice conscripta [.], Latine reddita [.] a L. de Dieu. Ibid., 1639. (8), 144 pp. (And:) L. de Dieu. [`Ansarha-yi zaban-i Farsi]. Rudimenta linguae Persicae. Ibid., 1639. (8), 95, (1) pp. All titles printed in red and black. 3 works bound in one. Contemporary vellum, spine with manuscript title. Dieu, Louis (Ludovicus) de (1590-1642), Dutch Orientalist. In 1635 two Persian texts fell into his hands, which further stimulated his interest in the language. They contained lives of Christ and St. Peter, originally written in Portugese by the Jesuit priest Jerome Xavier (1549-1617) and then translated into Persian at the command of the Mughal emperor Akbar (q.v.; Storey, I, pp. 163-66). De Dieu published both texts together with a Latin translation and annotations, intending to correct what he viewed as “misrepresentations” of Christian beliefs on the part of the Catholic missionary. At the request of the printers of these books he also wrote an elementary grammar (Rudimenta linguae Persicae), with the first two chapters of the Book of Genesis from the Persian Pentateuch of Rabbi Tawus attached as reading material. His work was the first Persian grammar published in Europe. (Encyclopaedia Iranica). From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013). Historia Christi Persice conscripta. With: (2) XAVIER, Hieronymous: XAVIER, Hieronymous (Jerónimo

About this Item: Rahir 473, 486-487; Smitskamp 310-312; Willems 477, 490. First editions of three pioneering works of Persian scholarship prepared for publication by Ludovicus de Dieu (1590-1642) and printed and published by the Elzeviers in Leiden. The first and longest is a life of Christ originally written in Portuguese by an unknown author and translated into Persian by Xavier (1549-1642) and his pupil Abd al-Sattar (active 1597-1615) at the Mogul court. The second work is a life of Saint Peter from a life of the Apostles newly written by Xavier in Persian, perhaps also with the aid of his Persian-speaking students. The third work, written by De Dieu or possibly by Johann Elichmann (ca. 1600-1639?) and edited by De Dieu, is the first printed grammar of the Persian language and served as the principal source for at least two that followed in the next fifty years. At the end it gives the first two chapters of Genesis in Persian translation. With an owner's motto on the title-page. With the title-page of the first work and its conjugate somewhat browned and some slightly browned patches in the third work, but further in very good condition, with only an occasional leaf showing minor marginal blemishes. Spine label worn and tattered, but the binding is otherwise good. Three pioneering works of Persian scholarship, printed in matching style by the Leiden Elzeviers at the height of their careers. About this Item: Leiden, Elsevier, 1639., 1639. 4to. (24), 636, (8) pp. (With:) [Dastan-i San Bidru]. Historia S. Petri Persice conscripta [.], Latine reddita [.] a L. de Dieu. Ibid., 1639. (8), 144 pp. (And:) L. de Dieu. [`Ansarha-yi zaban-i Farsi]. Rudimenta linguae Persicae. Ibid., 1639. (8), 95, (1) pp. All titles printed in red and black. Contemp. brown full calf with gilt spine. First edition of the first Persian grammar ever printed, with two Persian texts edited for the first time from manuscripts. "De Dieu's most striking performance [.] De Dieu is well aware that he is the first to publish a grammar of Persian. [.] In the preface De Dieu relates how he studied Persian with the help of the Constantinople Polyglot borrowed from Gomarus, and mentions Elichmann as the supplier of the manuscript with the 'Historia Christi', which was owned by Golius. The latter also supplied a ms. dictionary of Persian. In the annotations to the 'Historia S. Petri' the original ms. is described: it contained two more Persian texts, and was once bought by the Rotterdam physician Johannes Romanus at Agra in 1626. The volume then passed into the hands of Elichmann, who lent it to the editor. The two chapters from Genesis are taken from a complete translation in Arabic characters [by Rabbi Jacob Tawus] at Istanbul in 1546" (Smitskamp). These are lives of Christ and St Peter, originally written in Portuguese by the Jesuit priest Jerome Xavier (1549-1617) and then translated into Persian at the command of the Mughal emperor Akbar. It was at the Elseviers' request that De Dieu composed, as an addition, the elementary grammar. The grammars of Ignazio di Gesù (Rome 1661) and of Labrosse (Amsterdam 1684) were largely based on his work. Willems notes that Raimondi, as early as 1614, produced a grammar in Rome for the use of missionaries which remained virtually unknown in the west, but this existed only in manuscript (cf. Smitskamp). - Occasional slight brownstaining, but a good, tight copy from the library of the Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013). Smitskamp, PO 310. Willems 490 & 477. Copinger 5255 & 1314. De Backer/S. VIII, 1339, 8 & 9. Rahir 473. Berghman 674. Schwab II, 727. OCLC 6445068, 6445039, 82252380. Seller Inventory # 44926
