Historia Transubstantiationis Papalis. Cui Præmittitur, atque opponitur,: Cosin, John, Bishop

About this Item: Tho[mas]. Roycroft for Hen[ry]. Brome,, London:, 1675. First Edition.. Collation: A8, C-N8. Pagination: [16], 165, [10]p. Full old calf, blind tooled ruling, stamped panelling, floral gilt spine, title label, hinges started, but strong, some wear. Few old pen and pencil notes. Corner off frontis, no affect (see picture). Illustrations: Engraved frontispiece bust portrait of Cosin by William Dolle. Engraved initial. Cosin (1594-1672), chaplain to Charles I and a liturgical purist, was responsible for much significant revision in the Anglican liturgy during the Restoration. During the Interregnum, he was exiled to France, having been falsely accused of being a Romanist. "Cosin was a most uncompromising enemy to popery. In France he wrote his 'Historia Transubstantialis Papalis' at the request of Gilbert Talbot, who had undertaken to argue the matter out with a German princeÌ (the Duke of Newbourg), in the presence of Charles II at Cologne, and apparently did not feel quite equal to the task. Cosin readily consented, and showed in his treatise that the church of England held the doctrine of a real presence without in any way countenancing the doctrine of transubstantiation. It was not published until nineteen years after it was written (in 1675), and three years after the death of the author; but the title says it was 'allowed by him to be published a little before his death, at the earnest request of his friends.' It was then given to the world, with an interesting preface by Dr. Durel, in the original Latin." [-DNB] Citations: Wing C6358. ESTC:R2240. Seller Inventory # 20128

About this Item: Straßburg Friedrich Wilhelm Schmuck Format: 8° [8] 372 S Mit gestochenem Frontispiz Halbpergament der Zeit mit hs Rückentitel minimal berieben, 1680. Jahrhundert fort" (NDB). Vorsatz mit alten Einträgen, Frontispiz sauber alt hinterlegt, Titel mit winzigem alten Tintenvermerk, leicht angestaubt. Insgesamt sehr schönes, wohlerhaltenes Exemplar, lediglich die Innengelenke brüchig. Sehr selten. VD17 23:281499R. ADB II, 793. NDB II, 372f. Vgl. Jöcher I, 1162f. Erste Ausgabe. A well-used copy but still in good condition; ex-library. "This treatise describes the many ways in which the saintly conduct of St. Francis of Assisi (1182–1226) conformed to the life and teachings of Christ. The original manuscript of this work, presented to the Franciscan Order by the Franciscan friar Bartholomeus de Pisis in 1399, featured a full-page drawing of Christ crucified on the allegorical 'Tree of Conformity'. In 1542 the Lutheran scholar Erasmus Albertus (ca. 1500–1543) intentionally misread the book's representation of St. Francis as a saintly reflection of Christ in order to ridicule the Franciscan Order for believing that St. Francis was the equal of Christ. For Catholic scholars, however, the book long remained a highly regarded compendium of Franciscan principles" (Perkins School of Theology). [16], 384, [12]pp (Index), [8], 397, [19]pp. Original spotted calf with gold lettering and tooling on spine. Raised bands. All edges red. Marbled endpapers. This remarkable work consists of a record of sentences given by the Inquisition of Toulouse (Southwestern France) between 1307 and 1328, and is preceded by an account of the origin and methods of the Inquisition. Van Limborch's "Liber Sententiarum Inquisitionis Tolosanae" is still considered important nowadays for its meticulous transcription of a manuscript by the Dominican inquisitor Bernard Gui long regarded as lost forever, but rediscovered in London (British Library, ms. Add. 4697). This volume is complete with its 10 striking engravings in 9 plates (including 4 folded). 2 of the plates are signed by Adriaan Schoonebeek**. Heavy rubbing along edges of binding. Hinges starting, but covers still attached. Moderate and sporadic foxing and age-toning throughout. Text in Latin. Binding in overall fair, interior in good+, plates in very good condition. About the author: Philipp van Limborch (1633-1712) was professor of theology at the seminary of the remonstrants in Amsterdam. His most important work, "Institutiones theologiae christianae, ad praxin pietatis et promotionem pacis, christianae unice directae" (Amsterdam, 1686, 5th ed., 1735), is a full and clear exposition of the system of Simon Episcopius and Stephan Curcellaeus. The fourth edition (1715) included a posthumous "Relatio historica de origine et progressu controversiarum in foederato Belgio de praedestinatione." Limborch also wrote "De veritate religionis Christianae amica collatio cum erudito Judaeo" (Gouda, 1687) (the "Erudite Jew" in question was Isaac Orobio de Castro); "Historia Inquisitionis" (1692), in four books prefixed to the Liber Sententiarum Inquisitionis Tolosanae (1308-1323); "Commentarius in Acta Apostolorum et in Epistolas ad Romanos et ad Hebraeos" (Rotterdam, 1711). An English translation of the Theologia was published in 1702 by William Jones (A Complete System or Body of Divinity, both Speculative and Practical, founded on Scripture and Reason, London, 1702); and a translation of the Historia Inquisitionis, by Samuel Chandler, with a large introduction concerning the rise and progress of persecution and the real and pretended causes of it prefixed, appeared in 1731. See Herzog-Hauck, Realencyklopädie. Philipp van Limborch was a friend of John Locke. * Jose Maria de Mello (1756-1818) was the son of Francisco de Mello, feral chief of the kingdom of Portugal. He entered the Congregation of the Oratory in 1777, and was chosen by Queen Maria I to be the Bishop of the Algarve in 1787. He hold this position until 1788, when he was appointed Chief Inquisitor and confessor of the sovereign after the death of archbishop Inácio de S. Caetano. Jose Maria de Mello has been accused of having a bad influence on the queen, advising her to follow a reactionary policy. ** Adriaan Schoonebeek (1661-1705) was a Dutch engraver, and cartographer. He studied engraving under Romeyn de Hooghe (1676-79). Schoonebeek taught etching to Peter the Great during his Great Embassy to Holland (1697) and was invited to Russia to work on commissions and train Russian artists (1698). He headed the engraving workshop at the Moscow Armoury. Seller Inventory # 38035

About this Item: apud Henricum Wetstenium, Amstelodami, 1692. 2 tomes en 1 vol. in-folio de (16)-384-(12) pp. (8)-397-(19) pp., veau blond glacé, dos orné à nerfs, pièce de titre en maroquin rouge, triple filet doré d'encadrement sur les plats, tranches dorées (reliure de l'époque). Edition originale. (8), 95, (1) pp. All titles printed in red and black. 3 works bound in one. Contemporary vellum, spine with manuscript title. Dieu, Louis (Ludovicus) de (1590-1642), Dutch Orientalist. In 1635 two Persian texts fell into his hands, which further stimulated his interest in the language. They contained lives of Christ and St. Peter, originally written in Portugese by the Jesuit priest Jerome Xavier (1549-1617) and then translated into Persian at the command of the Mughal emperor Akbar (q.v.; Storey, I, pp. 163-66). De Dieu published both texts together with a Latin translation and annotations, intending to correct what he viewed as “misrepresentations” of Christian beliefs on the part of the Catholic missionary. At the request of the printers of these books he also wrote an elementary grammar (Rudimenta linguae Persicae), with the first two chapters of the Book of Genesis from the Persian Pentateuch of Rabbi Tawus attached as reading material. His work was the first Persian grammar published in Europe. (Encyclopaedia Iranica). From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013).
