Item Description: ReInk Books, 2017. SoftCover. Book Condition: New. Reprinted from 1604 edition. NO changes have been made to the original text. This is NOT a retyped or an ocr'd reprint. Item Description: Appreffo Domenico Farri, 1587. Couverture rigide. Book Condition: Très bon. Pas de jaquette. In Venetia (Venise), Appreffo Domenico Farri, 1587. 2 vol. petits in 4 de [46 ff. n. ch.]-488 ff.

Bookseller Inventory # 000068

Item Description: In Venetia appresso Domenico Farri, 1587. Small 4to, ff. [xlvi], 9, [i]; 488; 111; seventeenth century English calf, worn, label missing, but cords intact. Provenance: Rowland Woodward (1573-1636), close friend of John Donne, with his characteristic signature and motto on the title page. Later in the possession of Matthew Lock - just possibly Matthew Locke (c. 1622-77), court composer to Charles II. Rowland Woodward was born in London, the son of John Woodward, a vintner; he entered Lincoln's Inn in 1591, where he was joined the following year by John Donne. Donne and Woodward - and his brother Thomas (b. 1576) - were close friends, and they exchanged verses: no fewer than nine of Donne's verse letters of 1597-1608 are addressed to the two brothers, including five to Rowland. From one of Donne's poems ('Kindly I envy thy songs perfection') it is clear that this was a two-way traffic, but none of Rowland's poems survives. As well as poetry, John Donne and Rowland Woodward shared an interest in book collecting. They were perhaps not bibliophiles in the truest sense, but the care they took to inscribe their books shows that these were prized possessions. Donne's library is reasonably well-known, although newly-identified books do occasionally appear; Woodward's is less celebrated, but it is not without interest even apart from the connexion with his famous friend. Like Donne, he chose a motto for his books, not one in English or Latin but in a modern foreign language: where Donne took his from Petrarch, Woodward used a Spanish tag, 'De juegos el meyor es con la hoja', which means 'The best of games is with the leaf' - presumably intended to mean that books are the best of all recreations. Woodward was proficient in several languages, and found employment in the early years of the 17th century with the ambassador Sir Henry Wotton: he was in Venice with Wotton in 1605, and it is possible that he bought this book at that time. There are a few early MS notes in this book, the longest of which (in Italian) are on f. 96v and 125r: they are quite badly cropped, but since Woodward's signature on the title is also shaved, it is clear that the book was rebound after he owned it, so the notes could be his - although it looks unlikely.
