A new impression of this work, enriched with useful and copious annotations, as stated to the title page. A captivating, enlightening, and graphic history of the French Civil Wars, also known as the French Wars of Religion, which took place during the reigns of Francis II, Charles IX, Henry III, and Henry IV, as well as the long regency of Catherine de' Medici. The war took place between 1562 and 1598, and saw political and religious unrest between the Roman Catholics and the Huguenots (Protestants). In this work, Enrico Caterino Davila analyses the political motives of the conflict, essentially minimising the religious motivations of the war. It was highly praised when it was published for its political history and the depth of the history, and has been considered as a masterpiece since. In fact, the success of the work was immediate upon its publication, with over two hundred editions following the first, as well as the work being translated into English, Latin, Spanish, French, and German. Twenty thousand copies were sold during the first years of its publication. There was a 1647 English translations made by William Aylesbury and Charles Cotterell, made for King Charles I. The writing style is coherent, and probes deeply into the causes of the events leading up to and of the war. Davila's humanist historiography and human interest style has been compared to Francesco Guicciardini. What makes this work especially unique is the first-hand experience the author, Enrico Caterino Davila had with the war. In 1583, Davila became a page in the service of Catherine de' Medici, who was the wife of Henry II. Catherine was a prominent figure in the Civil Wars, being the regent after the death of her husband. In time, Davila entered into military service, fighting until the peace in 1598. After the peace, he became a governor of the Venetian possessions of Cattaro, and Zara. During this time, he started writing this work, which he finished in 1630. The work was printed in Venice, which was a leading centre of printing in the world at the time. An early edition of Enrico Caterino Davila's fascinating history of the French Wars of Religion. Rebound in a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Small dampstain to the top edge. Internally, firmly bound.
