Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 208 pages plus index (complete). In Latin throughout. Fully covered in parchment. Cloth paper. A VERY RARE and MOST pleasing copy of this history of Roman Law from the busy jurist, Christian Hoffmann. Especially taking the book's age into account, this book is wonderful to hold, read, and to turn the pages. The boards have wear, scuffing and marks. They are benevolent, venerable. They are steady and sound. There is some wear to the spine seams, but the book's security and facility are unaffected. The contents are in excellent condition. There are, of course, age related marks, areas of tanning and foxing. In general, and by far, the contents are healthy, tidy, well maintained and preserved. The chapter, "Fragmenta Edicti Perpetui in Corpore Juris Romano-Justinianei Dispersa, ad mentem vir. clariss. G Vil. Ranchini, Jac. Gothofredi, Gerardi Noodtii aliorumque Collecta Atque Emendata", have antique ink annotations that add considerably to the character of the book. The pages are clear, very assured and certain, confident and delectably ancient. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.

[Ged, William (1690-1749), printer.] Sallust [Gaius Sallustius Crispus] (86-35 BCE). Belli catilinarii et jugurthini historiae. [2], 150pp. Edinburgh: William Ged, 1744. 129 x 176 mm. Mottled calf gilt ca. 1744, light wear, three areas of insect damage on the front cover. Small marginal tear in leaf C7, light toning, but very good. Early ownership inscription on the front flyleaf. Second printing, with cancel title dated 1744, but printed from the same stereotype plates as the first edition of 1739. Ged's pocket edition of Sallust's histories was the first book to announce in print that it had been executed by this new method, as can be seen in the book's imprint: "Edinburghi: Gulielmus Ged, Aurifaber Edinensis, non Typis mobilis, ut vulgo fieri solet, sed Tabellis seu Laminis fusis, excudebat" [Edinburgh: Printed by William Ged, Goldsmith of Edinburgh, not from movable type, as is commonly done, but from cast plates]. Stereotype printing is a method of printing that uses solid metal plates cast from molds made from the surface of already-set type, thus eliminating the need to reset type for future editions (a laborious and costly process) or to "lock up" expensive type in printing formes for months at a time. "Between Gutenberg's invention of printing with movable metal types and the arrival in our own time of â filmsetting' (photo-electric composition without the use of any types at all) . . . there has been only one really radical innovation: stereotype" (Carter, p. 161). Stereotype printing was probably invented in Germany at the turn of the eighteenth century. Ged, a Scottish goldsmith turned printer, is thought to have begun experimenting with stereotype printing plates circa 1725; around 1729 he moved to London, where he and his partners were granted a license by Cambridge University to print Bibles and prayer books using his new method. The venture did not prosper and Ged returned to Scotland, where in 1736 he published a proposal to issue his edition of Sallust, to be printed "from the most beautiful small types done by plates." Ged's stereotype method failed to catch on with other printers, lapsing into obscurity after his death; the process was reinvented by Foulis and Tilloch in the 1780s and perfected by the Earl of Stanhope in the early years of the 19th century. John Carter, "William Ged and the invention of stereotype," The Library, 5th series, 15 (1960): 161-192. . $1250.

Carattere latino, greco e corsivo. Early ink manuscript ownership of the Paris Jesuit College (Collegij Paris. Societatis IESU.) to the upper edge of the title-page. Stephan Brölmann (1551-1622) was a professor and lawyer in Cologne, where he lived, died and was a tireless advocate for the city's antiquity and importance. The city name (Cöln or Köln in German, Cologne in French and English from Latin colonia, colony) had its Latin root as well as a Germanic root submerged in Latin: Ara (or Oppidum) Ubiorum, meaning Altar (or Fort) of the Ubii. The Ubii were a tribe that allied with Julius Caesar in 55 BC to facilitate Roman control of the province of Germania Inferior; a veteran's colony was set up at Ara Ubiorum. Later, the Ubii came under the patronage of Julia Agrippina, wife of the Emperor Claudius; thus the full title of the ancient city was Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. Brölmann belonged to one of the patrician families of Cologne, and so burnishing the reputation of the city burnished his own. He distinguished himself from other aristocrats with the rigor of his historical investigation. He explored the remains of the Roman-era walls and collated the physical remains of the ancient colony with descriptions in surviving sources. He came into possession of two manuscripts, the Chronicle of Gottfried from the church of St. Pantaleon and a historical account from Eberbach Abbey, which he collated with classical sources to create the fullest-yet account of the development of the city. The historical commentary -- a preliminary step to a much fuller but never realized account, covering the foundation of the city to the end of the Roman empire -- is in the form of the explications of images: maps, city views, historical events and collections of surviving primary sources (inscriptions and coins especially). The maps and plans likely come from the Hogenberg firm; some, at least, come from Brölmann's own observations and perhaps even drawings. The union of research and primary sources makes the Epideigma a vital document of European history. Complete copies such as the present example (notably the errata leaf) are quite rare, with no copies in American institutions. The copy was preserved in the collection of the Paris Jesuit College (Collège de Clermont), which was dissolved and then disbursed by the University of Paris. The connection is best understood in the Dreikönigsgymnasium, the oldest and preeminent school in Cologne, which from 1556 to 1778 was run by the Jesuits.
