Item Description: Oxford University Press, United Kingdom, 2015. Hardback. Book Condition: New. 1st edition. Language: English,Greek . Brand New Book. In this new edition of Herodotus Histories, Nigel Wilson has revised the original Oxford Classical Text by the Danish scholar C. Hude, published in 1906 and last revised in 1927. As well as incorporating much of the valuable work on the text that has been conducted since the original edition, in particular that of J. Enoch Powell and Paul Maas, Wilson has taken into account new readings from over 80 papyri. In addition, clarity in the apparatus criticus has been improved by the collation of two previously neglected medieval manuscripts, which belong to the so-called Roman family. A number of passages remain puzzling, and Wilson proposes new solutions and provides plausible emendations wherever possible. The editor has also written a commentary volume, Herodotea, to accompany this edition, in which he explains many of the editorial decisions he made while revising this key classical text. Item Description: Oxford, e typographeo Clarendoniano, 1810. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 2 vols, lxxxi, 475; xxiii, 344 p., 24 cm, large paper (publisher's catalogue at end of first vol offers this option), contemporary red morocco, a fine binding but now rather scuffed. In the first Schneider has added the notes of J.C.Zeune and F.A.Wolf. Bookplate of Chichester Fortescue, 'Aedis Xti Alumni'. This identifies him as the politician (1823-1898), later first Lord Carlingford, one of the closest friends of Edward Lear (many letters have been published). Six volumes of Xenophon were published in this edition, but there is no indication that they were intended as a set, and I do not know whether Fortescue had more. Bookseller Inventory # 26194

Item Description: E. Typographeo Clarendoniano, Oxford, 1806. Hard Back. Book Condition: Good. Second Edition. xv, 573 pp. Latin & Arabic text within borders, steel engraved frontispiece portrait, vignette on title page, 1 steel engraved plate, partly uncut, rebacked, new vellum spine, slightly rubbed boards, scattered foxing mainly on front and last few pages, book plate of Peter Fraser. Copy in good condition. Edward Pococke (1604-1691), whose notes enriched this work, did perhaps more than any other man of his day to promote Oriental scholarship in England, travelling and collecting rare manuscripts ( It has been said that of all the numerous collectors of MSS. who have acquired books for the Bodleian. Pococke alone escaped being deceived and cheated in his purchases)., becoming Master of Arabic and first professor of the Arabic lecture at Oxford, and publishing valuable scholarly works like the present one. The Specimen Historiae is an excerpt from the Mukhtasar-fi-d-duwal (Universal History) of Grigher ( 897-967), Arab scholar who rose to prominent position in the Jacobite church at Aleppo and in Azerbaijan, and is the most valuable authority available for the Arabs in their pre-islamic and early Moslem days. Pococke uses the Arabic work as a centrepiece for an elaborate series of essays on Arabic history, literature, religion, and science. The essays are clearly based upon Pococke’s life - long researches on this and hundreds of other Arabic manuscripts, and his sound scholarship and remarkable erudition in the area of Oriental studies. It has been asserted that the Specimen and the Baingrigii Canicularia (1648) by John Greaves were the first two works printed in Arabic types at Oxford. The 1648 imprint on this work’s second title is undoubtedly the date when the whole work was first set up. ( D. N. B. Encyclopaedia Britanica). The extract from Abu ‘l-Faraj is the first Arabic text ever printed at Oxford, though the type had already been used by Henry Hall to print John Greave’s edition of Ulugh Beg’s Persian astronomical work at Oxford in 1648. Item Description: Editio altera. Oxonii, typogr. Clarendoniano, 1770. Folio (378 x 240mm). pp. iv, 6, 7, (4), 12, 77, with 439 engraved plates (depicting 1083 figures). Early 19th century half calf, gilt ornamented spine with red gilt lettered label A fine large paper copy of the scarce second edition, edited by Huddesford, of the first great English work on Conchology. "There is no actual text but the section headings and frugal descriptions are engraved on the plates with the figures. The complete first edition was published between 1585 and 1692. The engravings, some of which are very fine indeed, were mostly executed by Lister's daughter Susanna and his wife Anna who worked them up from their original water-colour drawings; many of these still exist at Oxford. The species illustrated are recognisable more often than not and none is reversed - a remarkable achievement in itself considering that gastropod shells had to be engraved in mirror image to ensure correct reproduction. The scientific value of the engravings is enhanced still further by numerous indications of locality" (Dance pp.23-24). "In the text the editor has printed notes written by Lister in a set of proofs; also two indexes, one according to Lister, the other to Linnaeus" (Keynes no. 49). Our copy agrees with Keynes quoting 439 engraved plates.Nissen ZBI, 2529; Keynes, Dr. Martin Lister no. 49. Bookseller Inventory # 7452

Folio (365 x 245mm). pp. iv, (4), 12, 77, 6, 7, with 439 engraved plates (depicting 1083 figures). Contemporary red morocco, richly gilt decorated spine in 7 compartments, gilt ornamented sides, gilt edges. "Lister's shell book, 'Historiae sive synopsis methodicae conchyliorum', was even more sought after as a reference book and was quite scarce. It is unclear whose idea it was to reissue the book; the project was most likely a collaborative one, involving the natural history dealer Ingham Forster (da Costa's friend and Humprhrey's brother-in-law), Huddesford, curator of the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, and the duchess of Portland. Huddesford was the editor."(Tobin, B.F. The Duchess's shells. Natural history collecting in the age of Cook's voyages pp. 207-208).Nissen ZBI, 2529; Keynes, Dr. Martin Lister no. 49.
