About this Item: London : Printed for R Chiswell at the Rose and Crown in St Paul's Church Yard M Wotton at the Three Daggers in Fleet-Street and G Conyers at the Ring near Ludgate, 1689. Revised and Corrected 15th edition. A very good quarter calf binding. 4to. 19.5cm x 15.5cm x 2.8cm. [6pp.]/pp.270/[20pp.] . Modern brown buckram with dark brown leather spine and titles. New leather label "Ancient Rome". Modern endpapers. Printed title and next two leaves creased, edges carefully strengthened at some time in the past. Dedication signed: "Tho. Godwyn." Clean throughout. A well preserved book. Referenced by: Wing G998 . ** " Thomas Godwyn DD (1587–1643), headmaster and scholar, was the second son of Anthony Godwyn of Wookey, Somerset. He entered Magdalen College, Oxford at the age of fifteen and between 1604 and 1610 was a demy of the college. He graduated BA on 24 January 1607 and proceeded MA on 11 October 1609. On leaving the university Godwin was appointed chief master of Abingdon School, Berkshire (now Oxfordshire), where he remained for several years(1608-25). While there he established an innovative scholarship for poor boys, the ‘Bennett boys’. Godwyn became the first fellow of the newly founded Pembroke College, Oxford (1624), became chaplain to the Bishop of Bath and Wells and rector of Brightwell, Berkshire (1626-43). Godwyn was a voluminous writer, and about 1614 he published Florilegium Phrasicon and Romanae Historiae Anthologia, both for the use of Abingdon School. These were the only school text books on the subject for a century. He also wrote a Synopsis of Hebrew Antiquities, and in 1625 Moses and Aaron. In his preface to Roman Antiquities, Godwyn gives a picture of the difficulties of writing his book in the noisy surroundings of the school room. "If it fail to please, put it down to the whispered chatterings of the noisy boys amongst whom the work had its origin; but if approved ascribe it to the continuous questionings of the boys." Godwyn died at Brightwell on 20 March 1642 and was buried in the chancel of his church, where a monument was erected by his widow, Philippa Teesdale. " - See Wikipedia. Seller Inventory # 36918

About this Item: In aedibus academicis excudebat Jacobus Morison, Andreapoli [St Andrews], 1796. 18mo, pp. [vi], 161, [1]. Contemporary tree calf, boards bordered with a gilt roll, spine divided by gilt rolls, red morocco label, other compartments with central and corner sunburst tools, edges sprinkled blue. Small paperflaw in one section title, a little spotting here and there. Binding a bit rubbed, foot of spine worn. Manuscript prize label to front pastedown, signed by John Hunter, awarding the book to James Anderson in 1804. The rare 18mo issue of John Hunter's text of Sallust, which omits the fragments and index included in the duodecimo of the same year (with the title accordingly changed to 'Opera'). The 12mo version is the first in a series known as the 'immaculate' classics (a Plautus, Horace, and Virgil followed), each of which was proofread three times by the printer and the editor, but this 18mo issue - largely the same setting of type - probably just predates those efforts, as it does contain a list of errata at the end (which were corrected in the 12mo). The 12mo is scarce, but this 18mo version is substantially rarer, recorded by ESTC in just four locations: BL, NLS, Case Western, and the Hudson's Bay Company Archives. This copy furthermore was awarded as a prize - as recorded by an attractively-written manuscript bookplate - by the editor himself, who was professor of humanity at St Andrews for six decades. About this Item: Leyde, Hack, 1671. 2 forts vol. in-8, [8] ff. n. ch. Seller Inventory # 187157

About this Item: nbsp;Paris -Fredericum Leonard, 1675. Hardcover. Condition: VERY GOOD. A nice example ofVelleius' Historical work on both Ancient Greece and Rome. Written in Latin. Adorned withdecorative head and tail pieces throughout, and a woodcut title vignette. Collated complete with a beautiful and intricately engraved frontispiecewith the Delphin emblem, signed L. Cossin sculp. . This workwas published astwo books, of which this is volume two, dedicated to M. Vinicius, and covers the period from the dispersion of the Greeks after the siege of Troy down to the death of Livia (AD 29). The first book brings the history down to the destruction of Carthage, 146 BC. This later history, especially the period from the death of Caesar, 44 BC, to the death of Augustus, AD 14, is treated in much greater detail. Brief notices are given of Greek and Roman literature, but no mention is made of Plautus, Horace or Propertius. The inflated rhetoric, the straining after effect by means of hyperbole, antithesis and epigram, belong firmly to the Silver Age, of which Paterculus is the earliest example. He purposed to write a fuller history of the later period, including the civil war between Caesar and Pompey and the wars of Tiberius; but there is no evidence that he did so. His chief authorities were Cato's Origines, the Annales of Q Hortensius, Pompeius Trogus, Cornelius Nepos and Livy. Condition: Rebacked in a mottled calf binding, with the original decorative boards. Externally, rubbed, with wear to the extremities and some loss to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound and surprisingly bright, with only some intermittent foxing. Some very minor marginal loss to page three of the preface. Bookseller's label tot he front pastedown. Overall: VERY GOOD. Seller Inventory # 034437

The firm’s founder was Lodewijk Elsevier (1546–1617) from Leuven who had studied printing under Christophe Plantin at Antwerp and the firm’s typography owes a lot to Plantin. After Lodewijk’s death the family business was continued by his descendants and this volume was printed under his son Bonaventura Elsevier (1583–1652), at a time when the firm was it its height Note: A superb set of the first two volumes of this set of three volumes, contains the books from one to 24 of Pliny 62 to 133 AD.
