Original buckram with mounted title-piece to front ; edges uncut ; 33 x 26cm. Tiny bumps to lower corners + a very gentle curve to the edge of the covers o/w FINE. In 1914 the Infantry were pitifully equipped with two Maxims, which were part of the Battalion equipment and invariably one or both of these were out of action. Nevertheless, in defensive actions during the first six months of the war, the Infantry were so highly trained in fire power that they beat the enemy to such an extent that the German Higher Command excused their defeat by saying that the 'British Machine Guns rendered any advance impossible.' Gradually Machine Gun Companies, manned by the Machine Gun Corps, were attached to Brigades and for the last two phases of the war each Division had Machine Gun Battalions which, by the time it came to attacking, meant our Infantry could advance with relatively few casualties. This superb and stunning book, written and illustrated by members of the Battalion, tells the history of the 33rd Battalion Machine Gun Corps and of the 19th, 98th, 100th and 248th Machine Gun Companies during the Great War. The 33rd Division, composed of New Army Units and under the command of Major-General Landon, C.B., arrived in France in November 1915. The Division was soon after reconstructed and in the New Year of 1916 the constitution of the Division, which took over the line at Cuinchy and Cambrin, was under 19th, 98thand 100th Infantry Brigades. Joined later by 248th, this history and memoir goes on to cover the following in its subsequent chapters : The Somme Offensive 1916 _ 17 _ High Wood. Gallantry of 100th Machine Gun Company _ Delville Wood _ Les Boeufs _ Rancourt _ Bouchavesnes _ Clery. ; The Battle of Arras _ Operations culminating in the capture of the Hindenburg Line before Croisilles _ Race meeting at Ayette ; Nieuport _ Memin Road battle _ Barrage Batteries _ Brilliant Action by 33rd Division _ Messines _ Passchendaele _ Machine Gun Companies Brigaded ; Passchendaele _ Christmas 1917 _ Reorganization of the Division _ Formation of the 33rd Battalion, Machine Gun Corps ; Meteren _ Neuve Eglise _ Brilliant Action of 33rd Battalion, Machine Gun Corps ; Dickebusche _ Ridge Wood _ Billets and Camps _ The Band _ Training the Americans ; The Cambrai Battle _ Villers Guislain _ Pigeon Trench _ Canal de St. Quentin ; Troisvilles _ Montay _ Passage of the Selle River _ Forest _ Croix _ Englefontaine ; Foret de Mormal _ Passage of the Sambre River _ Petit Maubeuge ; A Pilgrim's Progress ; Retrospect. This work is a Limited Edition of 1,600 Copies Only, of which this is Number 1283. It has been printed on high quality paper and has been lavishly adorned with a wealth of coloured and sepia plates, one of which is folding, a tipped-in coloured plate, photograph plates, folding maps and plans, including one in colour, plus black and white illustrations in the text. Furthermore, there is a tipped-in facsimile letter from Buckingham Palace thanking the author for the first copy of this work which was given to the King. No expense was spared in producing this collectable volume which forms an essential study to any military library or collection. SCARCE. Bookseller Inventory # C141B321
