Reprint. 12mo (17.5cm); original tan pictorial card wrappers printed in black and gilt, yapp edges; 78pp.; folding photographic frontispiece, text printed within pictorial marginal decorations. Minor edge wear, front hinge a bit weak, else About Very Good. World War I poetry collection preceded by a short tribute by the commander of the Lost Battallion, Charles White Wittlesey, dated November 11, 1920, a year before his disappearance (and possible suicide) from the Havana-bound SS Toloa. The Lost Battalion refers to the nine companies of the 77th Division who were decimated by the Germans in October, 1918, after the U.S. raid in the Argonne Forest. Of approximately 554 men, 197 were killed and 150 missing or taken prisoner. Jay Gatsby of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, hints at having been a surviving member of the Lost Battalion. Dark brown heavy card covers have creasing/rubbing/bumping around the edges but no heavy chipping or rips/tears of any kind. The last page has pulled away from the binding staples at the rear inside hinge, but the page itself is still firmly attached to binding. Pages are lightly toned throughout. Fold-out frontispiece is fully intact and in excellent condition. Spine is straight and smooth, with no gaps or other damage to bnding. Copyright page states "Seven Hundredth Thousand". Overall, an absolutely lovely copy of one soldier's tribute to his comrades in arms. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Private Press. Bookseller Inventory # 000871
