Item Description: John Van Voorst, London, 1874. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good/very good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. 2nd edition revised and partly re-written by the author. Illustrated with some fine wood engravings. Interesting but a little depressing. How much fauna have we lost since this book was first published in 1837? It seems that any rarity visiting the British Isles at that period was promptly shot, stoned to death or rapidly died in a zoo. The binding is the original dark blue embossed cloth, a bit worn to top and bottom of the spine. The text block is firm, with age-darkened head page edges. There is some splitting to end-paper gutterings and little foxing to inside of back and front FEPs and to an opposing half-title page. There is also some marking to pages xviii and p. 1, which has made a corresponding mark on opposing side and torn off a corner. The rest of the text is firm, clean and bright.
