Item Description: Published on board the ship. Soft cover. Book Condition: Good. N. D., ca 1912, 150pp, illustrated. Wrps. Light wear and soiling, small tears at the top and bottom of the spine, else G. Compiled from governmental records and documents preserved in the British Museum and State Departments in London. Launched in 1790 and amazingly still capable of sailing to the United States in 1912, this floating death chamber, and many other sister ships like her, constitute a dark chapter in the history of England's penal system. The ship, and others used for the same purpose, were called "Floating Hells" and after reading the barbaric details of floggings of 300 lashes, starvation, permanent chaining, lack of sunshine, fresh air, and various and sundry medieval tortures that routinely occurred, the name seems entirely appropriate. It is difficult to imagine the horrors endured by those unfortunates imprisoned on board, and the abject cruelty of their jailers. Bookseller Inventory # 06865
