Numerous black and white illustrations. "We have long been impressed by the scantiness of the bibliography of corn milling; and had felt it strange that in this literary age - while, on the one hand, there should be extant various valuable milling works of a technical character, and an excellent milling press - yet that, on the other hand, there should be available no published history, however crude, of the origin and progress of this ancient and important industry." - from Preface. About this Item: Simkin, Marshall and Company, Ltd., Liverpool, 1898. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. We offer two volumes of this facinating history of corn milling. The books are handsomely bound in dark green cloth with gilt titling to spine and front cover; volume one dated 1898 comprises 246 pages including index while volume three dated 1900 is more substantial comprising 330 pages including index. The first volume has a frontispiece plus numerous photographs and drawings in the text - the second volume also has a frontispiece and illustrations on title page and in text, but in addition is enriched by three magnificent folded engravings. All of them show Vernon & Sons work areas in Birkenhead Dock Flour Mill, including the engine room and the wheat cleaning department. The condition of the books is as follows: Vol. I is somewhat bumpedand worn at head and tail of spine and also on the corners of the boards while the gilt titling is somewhat faded; on the front cover the first line of the title 'History of Corn Milling' has the word 'milling' partly illegible due to loss of gilt. The endpapers are slightly marked and both sideds of the rear endpapers have a slight damp stain adjoining the top corners. The binding is slightly strained, particularly near the beginning of the book. The text remains reasonably clean for its age but the page edges are a bit darkened and dust-marked. Despite points noted the volume remains clean and sound overall. Vol.III is a much brighter example and the binding shows little wear; the folding plans have a few closed tears near to where they are attached to the book and along one of the outer folds, these tears have now been neatly repaired with conservation tape; the plans have occasional fox spotting on the back surface as do a few of the end pages; the text is remarkably clean for its age but the page edges are darkened and foxed on the bottom edge. Overall though, this volume which is scarce, is in lovely condition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 001723
