Whittaker, 1836, 2nd edition with considerable additions, and a new preface developing the system of the Port Wine trade, 8½ x 5½ inches, xlviii + 423 pages, half calf with marbled sides (probably late 19th century), very slight damage to the upper edge of the front board, marbled edges, new endpapers, a few near contemporary pencil notes in the margins (prior to the present binding as they have been slightly trimmed), otherwise a very clean & sound copy. NOTE: In the preface to this second edition, pp xxvii - xliii, Redding expands in detail on his remarks on "Oporto wines" made in the first edition in response to criticisms from "individuals interested in the Port wine trade (who) have considered he has done injustice to the merits of this wine.". Item Description: London Whittaker, Treacher, & Arnot 1833, 1833. Book Condition: very good. 1st Edition. xxxv, 407 pp. Octavo. Modern maroon cloth binding with a Morocco title label on the spine to match; gold gilt lettering stamped to the spine label. Faint rubbing along the edges of the boards and to the corners. Some transfer staining from what appeared to be a brown paper bag onto pages 22 and 23--stain measures about 1.5"x 1". Overall, textblock is clean and tight. Numerous black-and-white illustrations in text. An attractive copy. A very concise reference for wine connoisseurs, this book encompasses a variety of subjects including the manufacturing of wine, European wine (French being far superior), the East, Africa, and America. The first English book that dealt with modern wines. It was very successful and went on to be published in two more editions, 1836 and 1851 respectively. Bookseller Inventory # 139838

Booksellers label to front pastedown, neat ownership inscription to front flyleaf, some spotting to the text of the title pages and the introduction to the second edition. Some marking to the edges, gilt to top edge dulled. Lacking rear free endpaper. Front hinge starting, small split to bottom of front joint.
