Item Description: Hoblitzell, Philadelphia, 1851. Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Numerous Engravings (illustrator). 1st. Hard back history book with gold type on spine. Small illustration of an Indian standing over a dead white man (also in gold). Also has a folding plate between pages 50 and 51. Is 416 pp. in all. As far as wear on book, spine is chipped at top and bottom, and also has a small cut towards the front cover; front cover is worn and very slightyl torn near spine, and has some sort of stain/smudge on bottom left hand corner of cover; back cover has a couple of small, noticeable spots; pages are foxing, and some have moisture damage, it also has a water stain towards inside of bottom of some pages. A description of the history of where the book was found/has been is written inside front cover. THIS BOOK IS VERY RARE. Overall, considering this book's age, it is in great condition and a very special book.The book may have minor flaws that may have gone unnoticed. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hard Back. Item Description: H. Hoblitzell, Wheeling, [VA], 1851. Full calf, 8vo, 416 pages. Book Condition: Good condition. Frontis + 4 plates, of which 1 folding (complete) (illustrator). First edition. Rebacked with the original spine laid down, hinges repaired, signs of removed tape along front joint, covers considerably rubbed, newer flyleaves, newspaper portrait and article about the author tipped in. Contents moderately foxed, two small ink notes on p. 46 and 281. A nice association copy. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR "To Hon. Thos. S. Haymond / With the best respects of / His very true friend / Wills De Hass / Sept. 14, 1851." Thomas Sherwood Haymond (1794-1869) was a Congressman representing Virginia, and a lawyer. Born near Fairmont, Virginia (now West Virginia), Haymond attended private schools as a child and went on to attend the College of William and Mary. He served as a private in the War of 1812, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1815, commencing practice in Morgantown, Virginia (now West Virginia). He was president of the county court of Marion County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1842 before being elected a Whig to the United States House of Representatives to fill a vacancy in 1849, serving until 1851. Afterwards, Haymond was a brigadier general in the Virginia Militia and at the outbreak of the Civil War entered the Confederate Army as a colonel in 1861, serving throughout the war. He died in Richmond, Virginia on April 5, 1869 and was interned in Palatine Cemetery near Fairmont, West Virginia.--Wikipedia. Haynes 4825, Howes D226 (c). Rare. Bookseller Inventory # 012553
