Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. "The White Grub of the May Beetle" by J. A. Lintner New York State Entomologist, was published in November 1888 as Bulletin No. 5 of the New York State Museum of Natural History. The pamphlet, stapled and glued and bound in printed wraps, has several small vignette wood engravings of the beetle in various stages of life. the illustrations also feature enemies of the beetle, both insectiverous (a wasp) and fungal. The book was printed by James A. Lyon in Albany. Exceptionally well preserved, the book suffers only from a closed surface tear on the front cover. I was only able to display this by providing a view of the verso of the front cover, whereon I could indicate the location of the tear. Else the book is very nicely preserved indeed. ****************************************** SERIES : New York State Museum of Natural History Bulletin (No. 5) / TITLE : The White Grub of the May Beetle / AUTHOR : J. A. Lintner - New York State Entomologist ( Joseph Albert Lintner, 1822 - 1898 ) / IMPRINT : New York State Museum of Natural History / PRINTER : James B. Lyon / PLACE : Albany / DATE : November 1888 / EDITION : First Printing / STATUS : OP PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : NY State Museum of Natural History Publication; Series Monograph; contains several small wood engravings; 31 pages; 5 3/4" x 9"; printed black on green wraps. Front cover has a simple double line border. Back cover blank. The paper is laid paper, with the wire-mark impressions clearly seen. The paper of the cover is obviously fragile. *************************************** CONDITION - NEAR VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book which remains clean and attractive, with the following imperfections and particulars noted : EXTERIOR - Just perceivable on the front cover is a small surface tear with accompanying shallow surface creases (see the view I've provided of the verso of the front cover which shows more clearly the position of the tear, as it does not show up well in the views of the cover). Also a touch of weathering (or toning ) along the spine. Spine fold has a nick near the top extremity, and, as well, there is minute loss at the extremities. Rear cover has a bit of near-negligible rub - else the exterior is crisp and clean. / BINDING - Solid - tight / INTERIOR - Clean and free of marking.

Decorative Cloth. Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. A fair copy of the 1st edition of British Butterflies, vol III of Entomology from the Naturalist's Library edited by Sir William Jardine. In newer cloth binding with the original gilt titles pasted to the spine, with 34 plates of which 32 are hand coloured. With frontispiece portrait of Werner; hand coloured vignette title page; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; Memoir of Werner; text 246 pp; and 2 plain plates and 32 hand coloured plates at the rear. The binding is a plain blue cloth which is clean and has turned corners. There is a decorative bookplate at the front pastedown endpaper and a bookseller's label on the fep. Internally the usual preliminaries (eg volume listing, half title) are missing, as is the publisher's listing from the rear. There is no tissue guard to the frontispiece and there is an old signature at the top of the vignette title page. Text pages are generally clean with very toned paper and some dog-earing to corners. The plate paper is lightly toned - particularly towards the edges and there is offsetting to tissue guards (two lack guards). A couple of the plates have a cropped bottom edge which does not affect the image - but does suggest that they may have come from another copy. Plate 31 has a crease affecting the lower side edge and bottom corner. Some corners and edges are a bit dog-eared and fragile.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. vi,117, [1] pages. Illustrations. Table. Index. Bookplate inside the front cover. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Maj. Emory C. Cushing, SnC, an entomologist recruited from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), was the Army's liaison for research conducted by the USDA at its Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine laboratory in Orlando, Florida. History reiterates how insects and the diseases they carry have changed the course of wars. The role of insects in limiting production of foods, feed, and fiber becomes an acute problem during periods of war. Farseeing military surgeons, aware of the part insects play in the outcome of wars, made possible the planning of research programs in entomology. Agricultural leaders realized that agricultural production and its protection were essential to the winning of the war and that insect control was vital to any program of increased production. The successful conclusion of these programs assured ample food supplies and enabled the Allied forces to press forward to victory without the hitherto constant attrition of manpower caused by insect-borne diseases. This was the first war in which entomologists had a favorable opportunity to demonstrate their ability to prevent disease caused by insects. Their development of insecticides to control insects attacking man, animals, and agricultural crops was rated by leading scientists as second in importance only to the discovery of atomic fission.
