About this Item: Caxton Publishing House, Cincinnati, OH, 1868. Hardcover. Condition: Good+. 1st Edition. 931 pp; Full embossed leather. Edge wear especially at the corners, top and bottome has 1/4 inch chipped away, spine tears & cracks repaired with clear tape. Interior light and occasional foxing, endpapers have penciled previous owner's name and nameplate, and rear hinge is beginning to crack at pastedown but holding firm. Top corner of pages 168 to 170 is missing 1 inch, not affecting text. Still a nice tight book with embossed boards, a solid binding and a tight text. This classic of Kentucky history includes a history of the major battles fought, biographies of important figures, and detailed company rosters. The First Kentucky Brigade, known as the "Orphan Brigade," included the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 9th Kentucky regiments. Its ranking officers included Simon Bolivar Buckner, John C. Breckenridge, and William Preston. The Orphan Brigade participated in nearly every major engagement in the Western theater, and proved to be one of the Confederacy's most dependable fighting units. They were present at Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, Missionary Ridge, Chickamauga, and throughout the Atlanta campaign. Thompson issued a revised version of this work entitled History of the Orphan Brigade in 1898. "Possessing everything from rosters to tall tales, Thompson's thick study is a standard source for any study of the Western theater, especially the 1862 fighting in Louisiana." Nevins I, p. 168. Six full-page steel engravings, including the frontis of John Breckinridge. The list of engravings calls for one of General Buckner, but it was not bound into this copy. Very Good. First edition of the history of the famed Orphan Brigade, which saw action in many of the major battles of the War, including Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge, and Chickamauga.
