Duncan Jr | Dec. 30th '52" at title page's top right corner along with three-line ink inscription demonstrating greater calligraphic flourish "S. Duncan Jr. | Auburn | Dec. 30th 1852" at top margin of page 1. A poor antiquarian copy of the American first edition of Thackeray's thirteenth novel which was issued as Harper & Brothers Library of Select Novels. No.175. An heir to one of Natchez, Mississippi's legendary antebellum banking and agriculture fortunes amassed by his namesake father, Stephan Duncan, Jr. (1836-1910) grew up at the family's Auburn mansion with a post-bellum life spent heavily in Europe. In 1911 the Duncan family donated Auburn and its adjoining 200+ acre tract to the city of Natchez and sold the home's opulent furnishings (including its large library) at public auction. This book's most recent provenance is from a Starkville, Mississippi estate but was, in turn, likely acquired at that now infamous estate dispersal which stripped one of the state's acclaimed architectural treasures of its magnificent early 19th century collection of furniture and decor.
