About this Item: ReInk Books, 2017. Softcover. Condition: NEW. Reprinted from 1884 edition. Language: English. NO changes have been made to the original text. This is NOT a retyped or an ocr'd reprint. Illustrations, Index, if any, are included in black and white. Each page is checked manually before printing. As this reprint is from very old book, there could be some missing or flawed pages, but we always try to make the book as complete as possible. Fold-outs, if any, are not part of the book. If the original book was published in multiple volumes then this reprint is of only one volume, not the whole set. This paperback book is SEWN, where the book block is actually sewn (smythe sewn/section sewn) with thread before binding which results in a more durable type of paperback binding. It can also be open wide. The pages will not fall out and will be around for a lot longer than normal paperbacks. This print on demand book is printed on high quality acid-free paper. Original Publisher: San Francisco, CA: W.W. Elliott & Co. 472 pages. Seller Inventory # 453420925

About this Item: Wallace E. Elliott & Co., San Francisco, 1884. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. 1st printing. Folio in 1/4 calf & cloth. 302pp. Frontispiece: Shoshone Falls. 69 plates (including Front. and 5 double-page plates), 2 colored maps: the Pacific Northwest & Idaho Territory. Some plates are whole page lithos of one ranch or establishment, many are two on one plate, a few are three. A few plates are drawings of people. A few are newspaper facsimiles. The last plate is advertising. There are also numerous smaller illustrations. 1 table. The only caveat of which the buyer should be aware is that a previous owner has protected all edges with a uniformly applied black plastic tape. It is not unattractive and is only 5/16th" deep. Also, the spine is protected with a clear tape. It was carefully affixed. The text is near fine condition with only a couple of short tears, archivally repaired. The lithos are remarkable and show ranches, homes, businesses, etc. in most attractive settings that make you want to go back 150 years and live there. Howes (I2) describes this as the 'First full-scale history of Idaho." This copy has the ink signature on the first blank leaf of B. F. Swalley, whose lovely "Ranch & Home. Boise Valley, Idaho Territory" is featured as a full page lithograph facing page 78. This volume is loaded with interesting and detailed Idaho history. There is of course personal information included, but it is not a mug book with bios the way many of these histories are. It is truly historical in content. The plates are some of the most detailed and interesting this bookseller has ever seen in a pre-1900 territorial history: Mines, ranches, business, homes, government houses, etc. It is no wonder this book in the first edition is so valuable. Vg+. Signed Association. Seller Inventory # 1707049

About this Item: San Francisco: Wallace W. Elliott & Co., 1884., 1884. [9],20-304,[1]pp. plus maps and numerous unnumbered leaves of lithographs. Folio. Publisher's cloth, tooled in blind and gilt. neatly rebacked in red leather stamped in gilt. First few leaves with light wear at edges, some light soiling. Some light wear and soiling to text, a few scattered edge tears. Final advertisement leaf with one marginal loss, not affecting text. Very good. The first "full-scale history of Idaho" (Howes). This work contains illustrations of Idaho Territory's prominent citizens and their homes, including many specific ranches and farms; many of the buildings in Boise as well as street-scenes and views of other towns; mines, mills, and other industries of the territory; and a map of the territory with an inset of Old Faithful Geyser. The frontispiece is a view of Shoshone Falls on the Snake River. The introductory remarks indicate that the text has been divided into twenty-six sections for easy reference, including a history of the Northwest Territory; missionaries and immigration; a description of Idaho Territory's physical features, climate, soils, and natural resources; the "state of society in the Territory," biographical sketches of prominent citizens, and public schools; the native peoples and animals; and "miscellaneous historical matters." In the section entitled "Primitive Inhabitants," the native tribes of the area are listed, with a brief description of each: "The Pend d'Oreilles are peaceable, industrious, and, in the main, self-supporting. Many of them have adopted the dress, and, in a measure, the customs and habits of civilized people. The Kootenay's are an indolent, thriftless people, too cowardly to fight, too indolent to work, and many of them too lazy to hunt. The Shoshones are well supplied with good horses, and warmly and decently clad, with the single exception, dirt." And so forth. There is an extensive section on the Nez Perce, encompassing the Nez Perce War and efforts to relocate the tribe to a reservation. This work contains a remarkable group of lithographs illustrating ranches, houses, and properties in the Territory, making it a tremendous visual resource for the American West. HOWES I2 "aa".
