Item Description: Atlantic Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd, 1997. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. Spectrum History of Indian Literature in English accomplishes the task of historical continuity by linking with the past the most recent present of the writing in English by Indians. The book is a highly useful supplement to the earlier two Volumes by K.R. Srinivas Iyengar and M.K. Naik. Articles by Jasbir Jain and Sunanda Mongia are a spectrum presen tation of the latest developments in the field of Indian Fiction in English in all its technical & thematological innovations. Satish Aikant`s article provides a serious backdrop to the Volume by deliberating upon the historicity of English studies in India, their need, relevance and epistemological repercussions. R.K. Singh`s article does well to deconstruct the myth that good poetry is published only by the established publishers. His account of little or less known Indian poets in English is both critical and historically illuminating. Charu Sheel Singh, Shyam Asnani and Attiya Singh discuss Indian English Poetry, Criticism, Drama and Fiction respectively. Meena Sodhi`s article is a good compilation of Indian autobiographies, mostly in English, which she discusses with good critical sense and perceptive imagination. A.N. Dwivedi`s article on Indian English Short Stories is a comprehensive and balanced piece which is also rich in illustrations. The two Appendices add to the value of the book by cherishing critical attention on what may be called tradition and experiment in Indian English Poetry and Fiction. Whereas Satish K. Gupta`s brief piece highlights homogeneity in the sensibility of Aurobindo and Charu Sheel, it takes pains and care to chalk out differences in mode, manner and the whole presentation idiom in the latter`s poetry from that of Aurobindo. Krishan Mohan Pandey`s account of the Post-Modemist reaction against Gandhi in Indian Fiction in English is timely. It reaffirms faith in an Indian critic`s belief in what Tagore once said : "I cannot love a God who does not give me freedom to deny Him." Printed Pages: 296. Bookseller Inventory # 23858

Item Description: Orient BlackSwan, 2010. Softcover. Book Condition: New. For anyone interested in the story of English in India, or in the finest English storytellers of India, this is the essential companion. This book is a history of two hundred years of Indian literature in English. It starts by looking at the introduction of English into India?s complex language scenario around 1800. It then takes up the canonical poets, novelists, and dramatists, as well as a few unjustly forgotten figures, who have made significant contributions to the evolution of Indian literature in English. The book comprises twenty-four chapters, written by some of India?s foremost scholars and critics. Each chapter is devoted either to a single author (Kipling, Tagore, Sri Aurobindo, R.K. Narayan), or to a group of authors (the Dutt family of nineteenth-century Calcutta; the Indian diasporic writers of the twentieth century), or to a genre (beginnings of the Indian novel; poetry since Independence). Though the contributors are all experts in their chosen areas, this is a book for the non-specialist general reader. Biographical information on major literary figures is provided, and in most cases their work is historically contextualized. The chapters can be read selectively (for example, to follow the development of a genre) or in the order in which they appear, which is chronological. William Jones and Thomas Macaulay, Henry Derozio and Toru Dutt, Bankim and Tagore, Kipling and Naipaul, G.V. Desani and Raja Rao, R.K. Narayan and Nirad C. Chaudhuri, Sarojini Naidu and Anita Desai, Gandhi and Nehru, Mulk Raj Anand and Aubrey Menen, Khushwant Singh and Ved Mehta, Verrier Elwin and Salim Ali, Jim Corbett and M. Krishnan, Nissim Ezekiel and A.K. Ramanujan, Salman Rushdie and Vikram Seth, Amitav Ghosh and I. Allan Sealy, Gieve Patel and Girish Karnad, social reformers and religious thinkers, conservationists and hunters, Presidency College and St Stephen?s College, drama and translation, this volume covers everything of literary significance that has happened in India. Printed Pages: 472. Bookseller Inventory # 13285

Item Description: C Hurst Co Publishers Ltd, United Kingdom, 2003. Paperback. Book Condition: New. New edition. Language: N/A. Brand New Book. For anyone interested in the story of English in India, or in the finest English storytellers of India, this book, an illustrated history of two hundred years of Indian literature in English, should be a useful companion. It discusses the canonical poets, novelists and dramatists as well as many of the lesser known literary figures - scientists, spiritualists and learned men and women - who have made major contributions to the evolution of Indian literature in English. The book comprises 24 chapters, each by a well-known writer or critic. Each chapter is devoted to either a single author (Kipling, Tagore, Sri Aurobindo, R.K. Narayan, Rushdie) or to a group of authors (the Dutt family 19th-century Calcutta; the Indian diasporic writers of the twentieth century) or to a genre (beginnings of the Indian novel; poetry since Independence). This is a book for the non-specialist general reader. Biographical information on every major Indian literary figure is provided and the work of each author, genre or school is historically contextualized. The essays can be read selectively - for example, to follow the development of a genre - or read in the order in which they appear, which is chronological. The information is supplemented by 150 rare photographs and sketches of writers, collected specially for this volume William Jones and Thomas Macaulay, Henry Derozio and Toru Dutt, Bankim and Tagore, Kipling and Naipaul, G.V. Desani and Raja Rao, R.K. Narayan and Nirad C. Chaudhuri, Sarojini Naidu and Anita Desai, Gandhi and Nehru, Mulkraj Anand and Aubrey Menen, Khushwant Singh and Ved Mehta, Verrier Elwin and Salim Ali, Jim Corbet and M. Krishnan, Nissim Ezekiel and A.K. Ramanujan, Salman Rushdie and Vikram Seth, Amitav Ghosh and I. Allan Sealy, Gieve Patel and Girish Karnad, social reformers and religious thinkers, conservationists and hunters, drama and translation, this volume covers everything of literary significance in India from Ram Mohan Ray to Arundhati.
