About this Item: Hattiesburg, MS: Educators' Biographical Press, 1973., 1973. #280 of a first edition limited to 350 copies INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY THE AUTHOR. [8], 388 pages. Hardcover; H 26.25cm x L 21cm. No dust jacket (presumably as issued). Blue cloth, white discoloration to front board but with gilt lettering quite bright, some rubbing to spine's gilt lettering but overall still easily legible. Edges toned with light stain upon top-edge; some toning to front endpapers. Warm nine-line ink authorial inscription dated March 10, 1974 upon front free endpaper with author's additional signature upon the title page; hand-written ink correction to book's limitation upon half-title page; small slip of xeroxed paper featuring "Notes by the Author" taped to copyright page; single hand-written ink correction to page citation on page 381 of Index. Interior pages are otherwise clean and binding is firm. A very good- copy. Features recollections, opinions, and musings by Fayette, Alabama-born but long-time Mississippian Robert Cecil Cook (1903-1979). Enduring the death of his parents and abandonment by his stepmother, Robert Cecil Cook's tumultuous childhood improved dramatically upon age eleven when he moved in with aunt Jessie Cook Love and uncle Major William A. Love, owners of both a residence in Columbus, Mississippi as well as a 2000 acre cotton farm named McGowah Place approximately twelve miles from the city in Lowndes County. Upon graduating from Stephen D. Lee High School in Columbus, Cook enrolled at Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Mississippi State University) earning a bachelors degree in Spring 1924. Early jobs as a teacher, publisher, and school superintendent led to a Ph.D. from Columbia University and military service during World War II. Cook eventually served as president of Mississippi Southern College (now the University of Southern Mississippi) in Hattiesburg, Mississippi from 1945-1954 and was co-founder of Southeastern Life Insurance Company in 1955.
