Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Thick, large octavo brown library cloth. History of Concord: Map, [I - iii] iv - vii, 1 - 392, blank, Review of History of Concord: [1-2] 3-21, A Historical Discourse: [1-3] 4-52. The large map, Plan of the Town of Concord, Mass in the County of Middlesex is present, backed with linen and measuring 23 ¼ by 19 ¼ inches. Emerson's Historical Discourse is Emerson's first separately published substantial publication, preceded only by the pamphlet and broadside printings of his 1832 Letter to the Second Church and Society of the same year. BAL 5178. Blanck lists the size of Emerson's publication as 9 ¾ by 6 7/16 inches. The leaves here have been trimmed during binding to 8 3/8 by 5 ¼ inches, which still allows for comfortable margins. The signature mark 3 is present, priority unknown. Emerson refers several times in footnotes to Shattuck's work, here supplied. The Emerson piece is clean and fresh through page 25, with light scattered foxing thereafter, a bit heavier but still quite readable in the appendix which relates the program of the meeting. The title page to the Emerson has a small, neat embossed seal of the Long Island Historical Society. The title page of the Shattuck is professionally repaired at the bottom, with light chipping remaining at the fore edge and with a small stamp of the Long Island Historical Society at the margin. The binding is sound, and other than the issues mentioned, the contents are fine. Rare.

First Edition
A very handsome copy bound in quarter leather spine stamped brightly in gold; and leather tips. In marbled paper-covered board set off by bright golden rulers. With a touch of wear and scuffing at the top of the spine and the edge of one of the corners. Printed on quality white paper with a touch of foxing here and there with two smudges at the bottom corner of p. 361, not affecting text. Otherwise, very clean and tight throughout. Marbled endpapers and tight hinges. With the linen-backed folding map of Concord, MASS 1830 bound in at the front. Surveyed by John G. Hales. The map is dated 1830 and measures 22.5" x 18.5" and has a few notations and corrections in ink. It is lightly worn at the folds with some loss of paper along the second horizontal folds. With a small patch of paper, the size of a quarter, abraded in the right-hand corner, not affecting any lettering or map lines. "This scarce and lovely plan provides an immensely detailed view of the natural and human geography of early 19th-century Concord. Of primary interest are the named business establishments, dwellings with owners names, schools, and roads. Keyed symbols are employed to differentiate natural features such as hills, woodlands, meadows and ponds (including Walden Pond). The town boundaries are carefully delineated with respect to both length and direction. This map was first issued in 1830 as a separate, then again in Lemuel Shattuck s 1835 History of the Town of Concord. The example offered here is from Shattuck." (Boston Rare Maps)A rather scarce map originally bound into this copy of Shattuck's History of Concord. Lemuel Shattuck (1793-1859) was a Boston politician, historian, bookseller and publisher. When he was 46, he retired from business to devote himself to his other interests. His research for his 1835 book on Concord history pointed up to him the neglect of vital records. This was one of his motivations in joining others to found the American Statistical Association in 1839. He also promoted legislation which required a better system for the registration of vital information. This law was passed in 1842. His work on a Boston census in 1845 resulted in him being summoned as a consultant for the 1850 United States Census. His 1850 report on a sanitary survey of Massachusetts was later praised as amazingly far-sighted.His role in designing and implementing the Boston Census of 1845 took him to Washington to help design federal models based on the same. His Report of the Sanitary Commission of Massachusetts in 1850 has been described as a prophetic document in its anticipation of public health developments Lemuel Shattuck is remembered at theLondon School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine where his name appears on the School's Frieze. The names of 23 pioneers of public health and tropical medicine were chosen to be honored when the School was built in 1929.
