Item Description: The Kelmscott Society, New York, 1888. Half-Leather/Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Hardback. The Works of Vixtor Hugo. History of a Crime. Poems. Volume I. Slight foxing to end inside covers. Slight marks to cloth. Slight wear to top and bottom of leather spine and corners. Brown leather with grey cloth. Translated by Huntington Smith. This book was written twenty-six years ago, at Brussels, during the first months of exile. It was begun on the fourteenth of December 1851, the day after the author reached Belgium, and it was completed on the fifth of May 1852, as if chance would commemorate the anniversary of the death of the first Bonaparte with the condemnation of the second. Chance also, by an accumulation of labour, care and sorrow, has delayed the publication of this history till the present eventful year of 1877. Had chance also something to do with the coincidence that brings the affairs of the past and the affairs of today in juxtaposition? We trust not. As we have said, the story of the Coup d'Etat was written by a hand still hot with battling against the Coup d'Etat. The exile at once became an historian. In his outraged memory he bore the impress of a crime, and he desired that nothing should be lost. Hence this book. The manuscript of 1851 has been only slightly retouched. As it was, it remains; abounding in details, alive, we might almost say bleeding, with reality. The author sits as trial justice; his companions in combate and exile all appear before him and proffer their evidence. His own testimony is added to theirs. History now has the facts. She will decide. Frontispiece. 336 pp. Gilt top edge. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.) Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo. Harback. Bookseller Inventory # 094027

Item Description: London - Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1878. Hardcover. Book Condition: FAIR. First edition. A scarce four volume set of Vicor Hugo's essay The History of a Crime, the first two volumes of which are the second UK edition, whereas the third and fourth (added as a further, initially unplanned expansion) are UK first editions. The History of a Crime is Hugo's account of Napoleon III'stakeover of France and remained unpublished for some twenty-six years after its completion. Initially elected by direct popular vote (the first such election in France's history),Napoleon IIIwas subsequently blocked from running for a second term and instead organised a coup d'etat in 1851 and took the throne the following year, imposing harsh censorship and repression against those who opposed himor he suspected of doing so. Here, Victor Hugo's unique literary style recounts and analyses this turbulent era, as an eyewitness. Each volume contains an ink inscribed bookplate to front free endpaper of the Eclectic Book Society, Oxford, dated 1878-79. Condition: In cloth binding with gilt detailing. Externally sound. there are markings to the boards and backstrips, as well as wear to the joints, boards, backstrip and extremities. Thejoints of volumes one and three have closed tears and the backstrips on these are starting as a result and feature shelfwear. The hinges are also somewhat tender. Internally, the binding is tender but holding and the pages are generally bright and clean throughout, aside from the usual foxing to endpages. Overall: FAIR. Bookseller Inventory # 048072
