Seller: Hugh Pagan Limited, Brockenhurst, HANTS, United Kingdom
A history of mural painting up to the end of the twelfth century, based on Westlake?s own personal expertise in this medium and placing particular emphasis on Christian church art of 8th -11th century date. Art of this period had particularly appealed to Westlake?s principal patron, the 3rd Marquess of Bute, and to architects in Lord Bute?s immediate circle such as Robert Weir Schultz, but Bute had died in 1900, and these volumes are therefore dedicated to Bute?s son, the 4th Marquess. Folio. 2 vols. (12) + 134pp, 216 text ills ; (8) + 190pp, 208 text ills. Publisher?s cloth, slightly chipped at head and foot of spines. Jill Allibone?s copy, with her bookplates. A pencil note in the first volume describes this set as ?the author?s copy?, which may well have been the case, but no confirmatory evidence is provided by a study of the set itself.
