A little bumping & wear to covers ; gentle fading to spines ; a little rubbing to e.p., along front hinge of Vol. I, o/w V.G. Here is a three volume, sought-after set of the history of the 2nd King Edward’s Own Goorkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles) from 1815 to 1948. The first two volumes were originally published in 1912 and 1924 respectively and were reprinted here by the original publishers just ahead of the third volume by Stevens which appeared in 1952. All three volumes are uniformly bound. (A fourth volume covering the period 1948 – 1994 was published as recently as 2003 by Colonel D. R. Wood. Although not the fourth volume to this set, we do have another good history covering, similarly, the period 1948 – 1971, available here by H. James.) The first volume follows the history of the corps from its formation in 1815, through the Mahratta War of 1817-18, the Siege of Bhurtpore, the Sutlej War, the Sikh War, in the various actions surrounding Delhi in 1857 and in the period following, in Afghanistan, the Burmese War, the Manipur Rebellion, and at the North-West Frontier in 1897. Much detail is given in between on the life and activities of the corps including changes to the uniform and the distribution of Bronze Stars. The second volume, originally printed for private circulation only, spans the period 1911 to 1921 and naturally concerns itself with the First World War. Divided into two parts, the first part of the book deals with the corps’ service in France, Egypt, at the North-West Frontier and in India whilst the second part of the book covers Mesopotamia and North Persia. The third and final volume covers the period 1921 to 1948 and similarly focuses upon the Second World War. Here we follow the actions of the First Battalion from the Persian Gulf to Tunisia, at Wadi Akarit, at the end in North Africa, upon arrival in Italy and at Cassino, in the Lower Adriatic and Central Italy, at The Gothic Line, and at the Occupation of Macedonia. We subsequently follow the Second Battalion in the Retreat at Malaya, at the Singapore tragedy and during the years of captivity. The volume then covers the actions of the Third Battalion on The Chindit Expedition and from Maungdaw to Ruywa, and the Fourth Battalion along the Irrawaddy Valley. Each volume is supported by detailed appendices plus a wealth of photograph plates and maps, plans, sketches and charts, several of which are folding. 3 Vols. : VERY SCARCE. (See also No. 326).
