Seller: Ebeth & Abayjay Books, Lima, OH, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. This offering is a set of the three volumes that make up the books in A History of the Crusades. The books were written by Steven Runciman. It's a three volume set. Each of the books is in very good condition and none of the books have a dust jacket. All three are ex-library copies and DO have library markings, and library wear . . . though I do believe they had minimal use as they were in the Reference and Memorial sections for most of their stay. Each volume is 5 3/8" by 8 3/8" with nice, clean, sturdy, red, rebound cloth boards. Volume 1 (The First Crusade and the Foundation of the Kingdom of Jerusalem) has 377 pages, Volume 2 (The Kingdom of Jerusalem and the Frankish East 100 - 1187) has 423, and Volume 3 (The Kingdom of Acre and the Later Crusades) has 530. All of the volumes have a Table of Contents, an Index, and a Bibliography. Volumes 2 and three have fold outpages . . . one a map, the other a genealogical tree. The books were published by Cambridge at the University Press in the early 1950's. They do not all appear to be First Editions. For the Christian scholar, this is a great set for study, for the "pick a time and peruse" person the time span is big enough you can pick to your heart's delight. There are not too many complete sets out there, and few are in as nice of condition as this one. Not perfect, but really nice. Thank you!.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Illustrated Edition. 3 volumes., large 8vo., [viii, 316pp.] + [xii, 434pp.] + [xii, 448pp., folding genealogical trees], colour frontispiece to each volume, colour illustrations, maps, decorated endpapers, bound in marbled beige boards with turquoise and gold decoration with gilt titles to spines. A fine clean set in the original publisher's pictorial slipcase which has very light wear along one leading edge. Sir Steven Runciman's three volume A History of the Crusades, one of the great classics of English historical writing, is now being reissued. Volume I deals completely with the First Crusade and the foundation of the kingdom of Jerusalem. Volume II describes the Frankish states of Outremer from the accession of King Baldwin I to the re-conquest of Jerusalem by Saladin, and in the final volume, Runciman examines the revival of the Frankish kingdom from the time of the Third Crusade until its collapse a century later. The interwoven themes of the book include: Christiandom, the replacement of the cultured Ayubites by the less sympathetic Mameluks as leader of the Moslem world, and the coming of the Mongols. Runciman includes a chapter on architecture and the arts, and an epilogue on the last manifestations of the Crusading spirit.

"This set is an influential work in the historiography of the Crusades, including the events that led up to these expeditions to the Holy Land and an extensive study of primary sources. The work draws on a wide range of primary sources (in Greek, Latin, Armenian, Arabic). At the time of its initial publication it offered a novel interpretation of the crusades, less as a defensive war of Christendom against the threat of Islamic expansion but as a continuation of the destructive "barbarian invasions" that led to the fall of Rome. Furthermore, Runciman includes the history of the Byzantine Empire in his scope, moving his focus further east and at the same time tempering the "Romantic" view of the crusades as a heroic or chivalrous enterprise." Size: Octavo.
