About this Item: Constable & Company Ltd, London, 1993. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. John Murray first started publishing Napier's mammoth history of the Peninsula War in 1828, this is a first impression of this new facsimile edition of 1993. Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very very slightly bruised, not price clipped (£22.50), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 622pp. An unabridged re issue of William Napier's magisterial classic eyewitness account. A prime source for the epic struggle between Britain and her allies against the French occupation of Spain and Portugal. Napier (1785-1860), a son of Lady Sarah Lennox and her second husband Col. George Napier, fought all through the Peninsula War campaign. He retreated with Moore to Corunna, made the forced march to Talavera, took part in the storming of Badajoz, commanded his regiment at Salamanca and was with the army at the battles of Orthes and Toulouse in France. After Waterloo Napier was with the Army of Occupation in France, returning in 1819, when he retired on half pay. Seller Inventory # 005784

About this Item: CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, United Kingdom, 2011. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Published between 1828 and 1840, Napier's History of the War in the Peninsula was a tremendously influential, if controversial, work. Napier had been actively involved in the campaigns, turning to history in peacetime, in part to refute Southey's account of Sir John Moore. The first volume had a mixed reception, getting both high praise and bitter criticism from participants in the wars. He published several works rebutting his critics while producing the later volumes. Because of his obvious lack of impartiality, modern military historians treat the work with caution, but it remains widely read in the many editions and abridgements subsequently produced. Volume 3 is prefixed with the author's answers to criticisms of the first edition, and covers the period from Talavera to the Battle of Albuera in May 1811. Napier is highly critical of General Beresford's conduct of the battle, but it led to a French retreat. Seller Inventory # LIE9781108024204

About this Item: the Year 1814 Volume 3, 1836. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. A complete six volume set of Napier's influential, if not controversial 'History of the War in the Peninsula'. William Francis Patrick Napier was an Irish soldier in the British Army and a military historian who is best known, or rather infamous for authorship of this text, his 'History of the War in the Peninsula'. Napier had been actively involved in the campaigns, turning to history in peacetime, in part to refute Southey's account of Sir John Moore. The first volume had a mixed reception, receiving both high praise and bitter criticism from participants in the wars. He published several works rebutting his critics while producing the later volumes. Indeed, Volumes I and V contains Napier's defence of the text, with copious replies 'to various opponents' that take up nearly one hundred pages at the beginning of the text. Volume III and VI also features a series of 'Justificatory Notes' and letters from the author. A mixed edition set, with: a fourth edition volume I, third edition volume II and III, a second edition volume IV, and first edition volume V and VI. Rebound in a uniform full polished calf binding with attractive marbled endpapers and text block. Featuring a bookplate of an 'Edward Henry Scott' to the front pastedown of each volume. Collated, complete with: Eight plates to volume I. Eight plates to volume II. Twelve plates to volume III. Nine plates to volume IV. Eight plates to volume V. Ten plates to volume VI. Condition: Rebound in a polished calf binding with marbled endpapers and text block. Externally slightly rubbed and bumped to extremities and head and tail of spine. Slight handling marks to boards. Sunning to spines. Rubbing to spines resulting in slight loss to spine labels, more severe to volumes I, III and VI. Second spine label partially detached to volume II. Slight rubbing to joints. Joints tender but still reasonably firm. Front hinge split between endpapers, volume I. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, all volumes, slightly spotted to volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout, slightly age toned to edges. Age toning to endpapers. Tear to fore-edge of page 475 with slight loss, not affecting text. Faint offsetting from plates to facing page, volume II, III and VI. Scattered light spot to fore edge of plates, volume IV. Small closed tear to fore edge, to 'Table of Contents', volume VI. Overall Condition: Very Good. Seller Inventory # 057505

About this Item: London: Thomas & William Boone, 1835-40, 1835. 6 volumes, octavo (223 x 135 mm) Contemporary black quarter morocco, probably French, marbled boards and endpapers, title gilt direct to the spines, flat bands with triple fillet gilt, panels in blind to the compartments. Just a little rubbed, some light browning and scattered foxing, but overall very good. 55 engraved battle plans. First editions of the last three volumes; the first three volumes are third editions. Napier's work certainly divided opinion. "Soult considered it 'perfect', Sir Robert Peel 'eloquent and faithful', the Spanish general Alava felt it too pro-French, and a British officer in India demanded satisfaction on his return for a 'most unfounded calumny' about his conduct at Barossa" (ODNB) As a result most volumes are prefixed with "justificatory pieces" in answer to Napier's critics. His controversy with Beresford over Albuera was particularly rancourous. Perhaps judgement is best left to the acknowledged master chronicler of the conflict, Sir Charles Oman, who described Napier's work as "magnificent (if somewhat prejudiced and biased)". Bruce 3445: "A standard source and a classic work of literature, one of the finest military histories published in England". Seller Inventory # 125535

About this Item: London John Murray [and] Thomas and William Boone 1828-1840, 1840. 6 volumes. First edition, a unique set with the inclusion of a four-page manuscript letter and one page manuscript note by Napier bound at the front of Volume I. With fifty-five fine engraved maps and plans. Large 8vo, quite handsomely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in signed three-quarter navy blue smooth morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, the spines with six gilt stamped compartments featuring large central pieces nicely gilt trimmed separated by gilt chain-tooled raided bands, two compartments with brown morocco labels gilt trimmed and lettered, gilt ruling at the back and corner-piece, marbled endpapers and t.e.g. The bindings done for the bookselling firm of J.W. Robinson, his label on the rear fly. A beautiful set of the scarce first edition, the text remarkably bright, the plates all in proper order, the handsome antique signed bindings all well preserved with just the lightest of mellowing along the edges and joints. A HANDSOME FIRST EDITION SET WITH MANUSCRIPT EXTRAS OF NAPIER'S INFLUENTIAL WORK, and the work for which he is best remembered. Napier, who would rise to be a British general and knighted historian, as a young Brigade Major fought in the Peninsular War. His history of those days, though subjective, remained the authoritative text on the Peninsular War for quite some time. His objective when he first decided to try his hand at historiography was to defend the memory of Sir John Moore, and to prevent the glory of his old chief being overshadowed by that of Wellington. Wellington in fact gave him much assistance in his endeavor, and handed over the whole of Joseph Bonaparte's correspondences that were captured at the battle of Vittoria. Napier's work completely overshadowed competing histories by Southey and Lord Londonderry; its popularity such that Sir George Murray, Wellington's quartermaster-general, gave up, in despair, his attempt to produce an additional historical work on the subject. This extremely attractive set is made even more appealing with the inclusion of two manuscript pieces. The first being a letter from Sir William Napier, dated March 10th, 1852, addressed to Esquire William Lloyd Caldecot. In the letter, Napier discusses the Manchester School, a movement that stressed that Free Trade would lead to a more equitable society. He also mentions gold from California, the famous 'Gold Rush' was peaking at this time. The second item is a brief handwritten invitation from Admiral Sir Charles Napier. The note is written on a sheet with the embossed House of Commons Library stamp at the head. Seller Inventory # 30901

Written by Sir William Francis Patrick Napier, who served in this war. A mixed edition set. Volumes I, II and III are second editions. Volumes IV-VI are first editions. Sir William Napier became an ensign in the Royal Irish Artillery in 1800 and served for many units during the first two decades of the nineteenth century. He commanded his regiment in the invasion of France after Waterloo and remained in France until 1819 when he finally retired. Napier wrote this work following the suggestion of Henry Bickersteth. He did so to defend the memory of Sir John Moore and to prevent him being overshadowed by Wellington. Napier was assisted by Wellington for the production of this work as he provided Joseph Bonaparte's correspondence that was captured at the battle of Vittoria. The letters were written in cipher, but Mrs Napier discovered the key. Upon initial publication the first volume did not have many sales. Murray was disappointed by sales of the first volume and therefore Napier published the remainder himself. The reception soon picked up and the work was extremely successful. A lovely set of this comprehensive history of the Peninsular War, written by a veteran who served for many years during these campaigns. Condition: In a uniform full calf binding. Rebacked ,with the contemporary boards preserved. Externally, the books are in a lovely condition. Repair to the rear board of volume I and to the board edges of volumes II-VI.
