First edition of Prescott's first book, complete in three volumes. Original brown cloth printed in gilt, engraved frontis portrait in each volume, genealogical chart, uncut edges, [4],cxxiv,411p. + [2],xviii,509p. + [2],xvi,531p.,4p.ads. All volumes show some exterior wear and soiling, with spine ends frayed (see image provided). Hinges to all three volumes are intact, with nice, solid text blocks with no loosened pages. Volume I has dampstained and water-warped covers, with the preliminaries being dampstained as well at the book edges (some dampstaining is barely visible in the far margins through about perhaps a third of the volume, with endpapers adhered to each other. Volume II has some light external dampstains and an internal one along the very far top margin of the endpapers, frontis and title page. Volume III has some similar external dampstains, but none internally. This volume also retains its original ribbon bookmark, which has created dark stains on two pages where it has rested. Rear endpaper have also partially adhered to each other. Other than the aforementioned dampstains, pages in all three volumes are quite clean with very little (almost no) foxing, no notable chips or tears. Name of Laura Johnson in pencil in each volume, dated 1838 in the first. A nice, solid set overall, with the dampstains not as bothersome as they sound. First Edition. Hard Cover.
