Libris label of the bibliophile Peter Brook and the signature of C. R. Cording who was a junior rating in the ship. 19 x 13cm. Gilt on spine dull & slight wear to extremities and a light stain to front cover. 1 folding plate loose ; o/w V.G. HMS NORFOLK was a cruiser of a class of that name built at Fairfield in 1928, spending the entire war with the Home Fleet and playing a crucial role in the BISMARCK action in 1941 when she shadowed the enemy battleship and helped to sink her. In addition to that affair, NORFOLK picked up a further five battle honours : Atlantic 1941, Arctic 1941-1943 (escort on PQ 16 and the infamous PQ 17) ; North Africa 1942, North Cape 1943 (she scored the first hit on the SCHARNHORST) ; and Norway 1945. She survived the war and was broken up in 1950. This book, compiled for her officers and ratings, covers a two-year pre-war commission which the cruiser spent on the American and West Indies station between 1932 and 1934. NORFOLK sailed from Devonport on the 19th September and during her 43,880 nautical miles she called at Gibraltar, Bermuda, Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia, Grenada, Trinidad, Jamaica, Vera Cruz, New Orleans, Havana, Nassau, Quebec, Montreal, St Johns N.F., Halifax, St Johns N.B., Newport R.I., New York, Norfolk Virginia., Baltimore, Bahia, Punta del Este, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata, Rio de Janeiro, Pernambuco, Montego Bay, San Pedro, Monterey, Esquimalt, Ladysmith, Comox, Vancouver, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Kingston, etc., before returning to Plymouth in December 1934. The visits to each of these ports are described, together with sporting activities and the naval exercises the ship took part in. Illustrated with many photographs, there is also an account of the cruiser’s aeroplane – a Fairey seaplane. Bookseller Inventory # C148B002
