Item Description: HarperCollins, 2016. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. Mint condition.HarperCollins,2016.First edition of this Facsimile 80th Anniversary Edition.Hardback with Dj cover, both in mint condition. Illustrated. The book is new.312pp. This is another paragraph Book Description: This sumptuous gift set includes a replica of the very rare first edition of The Hobbit, the only edition where one can now read the original version of the story before Tolkien re-edited it to become the one enjoyed by readers since 1951. The Hobbit was published on 21 September 1937, with a print run of 1,500 copies. With a beautiful cover design, nearly a dozen black & white illustrations and two black & red maps by the author himself, the book proved to be popular and was reprinted shortly afterwards. History was already being made. The scarcity of the first edition has resulted in copies commanding huge prices, way beyond the reach of most Tolkien fans. In addition, subsequent changes to the text ÈÃ particularly those to chapter 5, when Tolkien decided in 1947 to revise the text to bring it better into accord with events as they were developing in its ÈÃsequelÈÃÍ, The Lord of the Rings - mean that the opportunity to read the book in its original form and format has become quite difficult. This special printing reprints the first edition, so that readers of all ages ÈÃ not just ÈÃchildren between the ages of 5 and 9ÈÃÍ, as Rayner Unwin famously declared in his report on the original submission ÈÃ can finally enjoy TolkienÈÃÍs story as it originally appeared. Item Description: Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1956. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. J.R.R. Tolkien (illustrator). 2nd Edition. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. A Near Fine copy of an extremely scarce early Hobbit. The 1956 printing, of the 2nd Edition (1951), or the 8th printing overall (1937). This copy is a stated 8th impression from the dustjacket, published by Houghton Mifflin from sheets imported from Great Britain. Stated 8th impression on front flap, not price clipped, noted as printed in Great Britain. One of probably only 1000 imported from Allen & Unwin, lacking the printing history on title verso, to help them circumvent the import restrictions and US copyright laws. The book features the original dustjacket with the Mountains and Dragon design by the author. The dustjackets has a couple of closed tears, one to the upper front panel and another to the upper rear panel, no loss noted. A bit of rubbing and wear to the top of the spine, some minor color loss at the flap folds. The boards show no soiling or marking, no shelfwear to note. The text block is clean, without foxing, a previous owners name to the front pastedown, hidden by the dustjacket flap. No other markings, no bumped corners, clean boards, virtually without fault. The dustjacket is not price clipped, and has no markings. A beautiful clean copy, one of the copies with the dark reddish brown boards stamped in blue, that are very hard to find. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. The maps are in excellent condition, with the red and black ink still showing clear and bright against the endpapers. Both maps have no foxing, no marks, or previous owners names. A highly collectable copy, hard to find in this Near Fine condition. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / Very Good Plus. Item Description: Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1956. Original Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. J.R.R. Tolkien (illustrator). 2nd Edition. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 8th Impression with Dustjacket, Custom Slipcase. A Very Good Plus/Near Fine copy of an extremely scarce early Hobbit. According to Houghton Mifflin records, one of 1000 imported from Allen & Unwin, lacking the printing history on title verso, possibly to help them circumvent the import restrictions and US copyright laws. The book features the original unpriced dustjacket with the Mountains and Dragon design by the author, with a $2.50 bookstore price stamp to the front flap. The boards show no soiling with a slight moisture ring to the front boards, the only markings, the slightest bit of rubbing to the spine fold edges, no significant shelfwear to note. The text block is clean without any writing or markings, slight toning, without foxing or offsetting, a small moisture or discoloration to a couple of pages around the title page. No bumped corners, no significant faults. The dustjacket is not price clipped, and has no markings. The front flap shows a previous fold down the middle, now straightened out and the dustjacket is now covered in an archival protector. It shows only the most minor of rubbing, with absolutely no loss of color to any of the edges or fold areas. An absolutely fabulous dustjacket. A beautiful clean copy, one of the copies with the dark reddish brown (rust) colored boards stamped in blue, that are very hard to find. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. Item Description: George Allen and Unwin, UK, 1951. Cloth. Book Condition: Near Very Good. Second Edition. 2nd Edition 1951 (5th Imp Overall since 1937) The very rare and important editon of the Hobbit. Only 1850 copies printed. In this new second edition Tolkien reflects on the new concept of the ring and its corrupting abilities, Tolkien made Gollum more aggressive towards Bilbo and distraught at losing the ring. The encounter ends with Gollum's curse, "Thief! Thief, Thief, Baggins! We hates it, we hates it, we hates it forever!" This presages Gollum's portrayal in The Lord of the Rings. This then brought the book inline with the future Lord of the Rings trilogy. Book is near very good and quite bright. Cloth hinges rubbed in places especially at the spine tips. Contents good. The textblock has been at some stage strengthed internally at the gutters which has led to it being slightly offset and lower by 3mm. Book has slight lean. More images can be taken upon request. Item Description: London: George Allen and Unwin., 1937. First Edition, Second Impression; being the First Colour Edition. Issued with the four colour plates and several black and white illustrations, plus two end-paper maps highlighted in red. Octavo (20 x 15cm), pp.310; [2], advertisements. Publisher's light green cloth with titles and designs by the author in dark blue, top edge tinted green. Neat gift note to second blank, contents clean, binding lightly marked and handled, corners a touch worn, top stain faded. A very good copy indeed. One of 1877 surviving copies of the original 2300 run that was bombed during the Blitz, November 1940. Seldom has any book been so widely read and loved as this classic tale. Its hero, Bilbo Baggins, has taken his place among the ranks of the immortals: Alice, Pooh, Toad. Tolkien's Middle-Earth is a vast mine of treasures and knowledge, its roots delving deep into folklore, mythology and language, and 'The Hobbit' is an ideal introduction to this richly imagined world, which was more fully and complexly realised in 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Silmarillion'. Item Description: London George Allen and Unwin, 1937. First edition, first issue, 8vo., frontispiece, one plate, 8 illustrations, map endpapers printed in red and black, all by the author, 2pp advertisements, fine modern binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in full green morocco with reproduction of original wrap-around dragon design in silver, with silver-star edges, preserved in a custom-made slip-case, a splendid example. The first of Tolkien's works of fiction to be published, The Hobbit began as an amusement for the Tolkien children, and reached print rather unexpectedly, a typescript of it having been shown to the publisher by a former pupil of Tolkien's. Once published, it was an equally unexpected success and Unwin pressed Tolkien for a sequel, which grew into the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Bookseller Inventory # 96673
