Item Description: George Allen and Unwin, London, 1937. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Author (illustrator). First Edition. Also available with our finer 1st/1st Hobbit for £68,000 George Allen & Unwin. Perhaps the most unique offering to Tolkien book collectors ever: the first 10 impressions of The Hobbit, all with original matching jackets. (Unused previous impression jackets were often sold on the next impression in some cases. These are all matching impression books and jackets). While all ten may all be together in a private collection, this is the first time we are aware they have been available for sale as a single lot. It took more than ten years of painstaking effort to collect them all. The first edition alone could cost as much as this whole collection in near fine condition or signed. From time to time the individual impressions come up for sale with jackets, but even later impressions are nowrare with the original unrestored jackets. None of these jackets have any restoration and remain in the charming original state. Itís not always understood by new collectors the valueis more in the jackets than the book, as the jacket are more scarce due to wear, loss and handling. Each book and jacket impression is unique; different ads on the flap, prices, impressions and text changes and corrections. The condition of each also makes this a unique collection as we beleive these are the best condition example of each of the first ten printings as the jackets have been upgraded to better quality examples over time. These were childrenís books and the jackets suffered wear and tear even when the books were new, but over the years the jackt paper has become brittle and delicate with age. Even with gentle handling they suffer furtherdamage each time with small chips falling off. Some have closed tears, tears to cover seams or detached and in section in some cases, but this isnít evident in the protective mylar. All jackets havetattering to spine ends, some paper loss, chips and scuffs to varying degree. Some are better than others as the paper was changed. The early impressions have some paper loss inparticular, but this also makes them more affordable. Many have faded/darkening to the spine colours. All are good to very good, near fine in some cases. All original jackets with no restoration. We can offer a lightly restored jacket and 1st edition book with only conservation restoration for the 1st/1st Hobbit for an upcharge of £20,000. The books are in very good condition considering they are welllove and read often. Some have slight lean and gift inscriptions, some of the middleimpressions have "ghosting" on the book spine/covers where the white of the image is burnedon the spine/book cover from the sun. All are complete, bindings tight, noserious stains, marks or damage. Thesecomprise first and second editions, but are commonly refer to the overallimpression in printing order 1st thru 10th. Up to the 3rdedition 1966 is considered scarce so there are three more books to complete the2nd editions. However we stopped at 10 is a nice round number! These ten books are: 1937 1st Edition/ 1st Impression. 19371st/2nd. 1942 1st/3rd. 1946 1st/4th.1951 2nd Edition/ 1st impression, 5th overallimpression. 1954 2nd/2nd,6th. 1955 2nd/3rd, 7th. 1956 2nd4th,8th. 1957 2nd/5th, 9th and finally 19582nd/6th, 10 overall impression. Item Description: London George Allen & Unwin 1937, 1937. An association copy, with an inscription reading: "B. and D. + D & M from Aunt Jane.". "Aunt Jane" is Emily Jane Suffield, who acted as go-between for Tolkien's parents during their courtship. From 1923 she lived in a farm at Dormston in Worcestershire, situated at the end of a lane, which the locals referred to as "Bag End". Jane was also instrumental in the creation of another of Tolkien's works, asking him in 1961 to write a story about Tom Bombadil, which resulted in "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil". The inscribees are Bertram and Dorothy Stone and their two sons, who also regarded Jane as their aunt. Beneath the inscription is a date in pencil, 1946; written in a different hand it is presumably a note of the year in which the book was given to them by Aunt Jane. Further to this there is a faint pencil note to the rear flap of the dust jacket, which seems to be a reference to the secret back door of the Lonely Mountain. The book is firmly bound in slightly bumped, rubbed and marked green cloth, lettered and illustrated in black, there is some minor restoration to the spine ends. The text block is slightly toned, with minor staining. The dust jacket is the original and not price clipped, with the correction to "Dodgson" on the rear flap, approximately 2/3 of the spine was missing, what remained was in danger of parting company from the rest and there was a portion of the rear panel missing, otherwise the colour was strong, with only minor toning. It has been sympathetically restored by leading paper conservator Richard Reeve, the extent of the restoration is visible to the reverse of the jacket, and before and after photographs have been provided as a record of the work. The book is nicely preserved and presented in a custom made, velvet lined box. Bookseller Inventory # 3340

Item Description: George Allen and Unwin, London, 1937. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Author (illustrator). First Edition, 1st. 1937 1st edition, 1st impression. Allen and Unwin. Very book and original, unrestored very good jacket. Book corners have rubbing to cloth corners, slightly grubbiness to spine and three small date stamps front and rear end pages, not noticeable at first glance. Looks like a child was playing with their rubber stamp as there are no other marks or indications to explain them. The dust jacket has a 3 inch paper section missing from the top edge of the rear jacket cover and a smaller section on the cover. This could be restored, but we donít recommend it. Overall, a very collectible copy and more affordable for the flaws mentioned. Comes with custom made clamshell protective case. You could spend £50,000 plus for a fine condition copy of this edition. Item Description: London: George Allen and Unwin., 1937. First edition, second impression (the first printing with coloured illustrations). Original green cloth with dark blue titles and illustration, in dustwrapper. Housed in a purpose made quarter black morocco solander case. Illustrated by the author with four colour and nine black and white full page plates and double page map illustrations to the front and rear. A superb example, the binding very clean and square. There is a tiny previous owner's name in blue ink to the top edge of the blank front endpaper and very light spotting to the text block edge. Complete with the near fine very lightly rubbed and nicked dustwrapper which is a little spotted to the upper panel and flap edges. There is no loss to the dustwrapper and it has not been price-clipped. An exceptional example in entirely original and unrestored condition. The first printing of The Hobbit was issued on 21st September 1937 with a print run of only 1500 copies. The book was an immediate success and sold out within months. This second impression was printed in December the same year in an edition of 2300 copies (423 of which were destroyed at the warehouse of the binder Key and Whiting in the bombing of London on November 7th 1940) and was the first printing to include the authorís four colour plates, initially commissioned for and later published in the American edition. [Hammond A3a.] Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers. Bookseller Inventory # 11537

Item Description: London: George Allen and Unwin., 1937. First Edition, Second Impression; being the First Colour Edition. Issued with the four colour plates and several black and white illustrations, plus two end-paper maps highlighted in red. Octavo (20 x 15cm), pp.310; [2], advertisements. Publisher's light green cloth with titles and designs by the author in dark blue, top edge tinted green. Neat gift note to second blank, contents clean, binding lightly marked and handled, corners a touch worn, top stain faded. A very good copy indeed. One of 1877 surviving copies of the original 2300 run that was bombed during the Blitz, November 1940. Seldom has any book been so widely read and loved as this classic tale. Its hero, Bilbo Baggins, has taken his place among the ranks of the immortals: Alice, Pooh, Toad. Tolkien's Middle-Earth is a vast mine of treasures and knowledge, its roots delving deep into folklore, mythology and language, and 'The Hobbit' is an ideal introduction to this richly imagined world, which was more fully and complexly realised in 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Silmarillion'. Hammond and Anderson. Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [310]. Bookseller Inventory # 49936
