Item Description: Allen & Unwin, London, 1986. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. J.R.R. Tolkien (illustrator). De Luxe Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A beautiful copy of the Allen & Unwin De Luxe Edition of The Hobbit. This copy is the 4th impression, published in 1986, of the 1st De Luxe Edition of 1976, with the Tolkien line drawings colorized by H. E. Riddett. This book is housed in it's original publishers box with label. Bound in black buckram cloth, with gilt artwork on the front boards of Tolkien's 'Green Dragon" gilt stamped in red, silver & gold. Gilt ruled compartments with Title, Author, and publisher on the spines. An exceptional copy for the collector. No names, writing or faults noted in the book. Maps are bound in, rather than used as the endpapers. The publishers box shows a little wear to the edges and corners, with no bumped corners or splits to the trays. There is some light soiling to the label, but the box has protected the book very well over the years. Overall a Near Fine copy of this wonderful book, housed in it's Very Good Plus box. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, Limited Editions, and odd bits of ephemera are available. Near Fine / No Jacket, as Issued. Bookseller Inventory # 1382

Item Description: The Folio Society / George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1976. First (and only) impression. The scarce variant issue of the first Folio Society edition, in itself the scarcest English language edition of this title from any publisher. The Folio Society edition was prepared alongside George Allen & Unwin's [GAU] Deluxe edition of 1976, the printing and binding of both being undertaken by W & J Mackay of Chatham who were to prepare the small Folio Society edition from the GAU sheets, the first signature to include a new title and copyright leaf bearing the Folio Society's name and device; these specially prepared sheets to be cased in the in the Society's distinctive binding of quarter leather and brown cloth; a striking contemporary design by Jeff Clements featuring a labyrinth motif blocked in gold to the spine and front board. However, the edition prepared for the Folio Society included a number of copies bound-up with original GAU sheets. The number of these variant copies is unknown, nor is it known why the mismatch of cases and sheets took place; the simultaneous preparation of two editions would argue for simple error. It may be that when the specially prepared sheets reached the bindery it was found that an inadequate number were available for casing and a few were quietly taken from the much larger GAU run to make-up the numbers. Whatever the reason, neither Mackays nor the Folio Society appear to have been aware of the confusion at the time. Very good condition, some minor scuffs to the spine otherwise without faults. Publisher's original brown card slipcase, rather rubbed and soiled with one short tear. An attractive example of this very scarce book. Bookseller Inventory # 2355

In all, this is an exceptional, and very collectible, example of this collection of classic tales by this ever popular author. Lord of the Rings - Published by George Allen and Unwin, London; 1979. First India Paper Deluxe Edition, 7th impression of the cult classic, Lord of the Rings. This beautiful book is in Fine condition, tightly bound in it's original publisher's black cloth boards, with Tolkien's illustration of the Numenorean throne with "Elendil" in Tengwar in gilt to the centre of the front board and gilt lettering and detail to the spine. Inside, printed on the thin, dense India Paper that is often used for bibles, the pages are clean and bright and blemish free, with the blue speckles to the paper ends. The book comes with all three maps, of which two are folding and all are complete, unmarked and entirely intact. This exceptional copy of this edition is housed in a slipcase, which is also in Fine condition, free from marks and with no damage to speak of. In all, it is an exceptional example of the deluxe edition first printing of the ever-popular classic trilogy by Tolkien, which is popular across generations and would be the perfect addition to any Tolkien collection, or the ideal gift for any Tolkien fan. The Hobbit or There and Back Again - Published by George Allen and Unwin, London; 1979. First Deluxe Edition, second impression of the ever-popular classic tale, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again. This lovely book is in exceptional condition, beautifully bound in original black cloth with gilt design to the front board and gilt lettering to the spine. There is the slightest rubbing to the boards, but apart from this the book is tightly bound and inside the pages are clean and bright and beautifully illustrated, with all illustrations still present and appearing unread and as new. The book is housed in its original slipcase, which apart from some very minor bumping to the edges, is in excellent condition as well. In all, this is as near perfect a copy of the deluxe edition as any I have seen and would be the perfect addition to any Tolkien collection. Overall, these three books are an exceptional collector’s set and as a whole are a very rare find indeed, with all books in Fine condition and free from damage and virtually as new! They would most certainly be an investment for the future and would compliment any rare book collection!. Bookseller Inventory # 296
