About this Item: Arts Council of Great Britain, 1985. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Second edition, issued in wrappers by the Arts Council to accompany an exhibition at the Hayward Galley in August/September 1985; 4to. Signed and inscribed to the title page by David Hockney: ‘For Mrs Rushworth, love, David x’. Mrs Rushworth was a friend of Hockney’s mother, as he later recounted in an interview: ‘My mother and [my brother] Paul’s mother-in-law came for Christmas [1979, the first after the death of Hockney’s father] with my younger brother, John, from Australia. Christmas in Hollywood was strange (very warm), only my second away from Yorkshire and my mother’s first. Everywhere we went, if asked her name my mother’s friend said “Mrs Rushworth’ Of course, nobody in California calls themselves Mrs anything, so it was amusing. We met George Cukor, who was very charmed by them, instantly recognising them as provincial unsophisticated English ladies with wide eyes everywhere. It was delightful and not in any way a chore. “The time of my life”, said Mrs Rushworth, and I think it was.’ Very Good: firmly bound in pictorial wrappers; rubbed to the extremities with reading creases to the spine and some furling to the bottom front corner; a little offsetting from the heavily inked pages, else internally clean. All orders are sent very carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard. Shipped free within the United Kingdom; a heavy book that may incur additional shipping (to cost) outside the UK.
